The nanny state
How much more does the city or state have to do for me? The City of Oshkosh Health Department had a “Take Back Medication” program that collected hundreds of pounds of outdated and unused meds – meds that won’t now end up in the Oshkosh water treatment plant via the sink or the old-fashioned flush-it-away method.
The same article mentions that a pharmacy in town will take the meds as well. Most pharmacies will take them. Ok, so an education campaign is in order via the local newspaper. But does the city have to be the one to put together this whole big program?
How about walking kids to school in Chippewa Falls? A group of parents and community leaders have applied for a state grant to “promote walking to school.” What? Yes, “Chippewa Falls elementary and middle school students soon could find it easier to exercise outside of gym class…” This makes me think of debates we had in the Common Council about which intersections warranted a city-paid crossing guard.
Now, I don’t have a death wish for my kids or anybody’s kids. Kids need help being safe walking to school. How about parents walking their kids to school? – what a novel idea! How about a group of parents arranging a “walking pool” just like we arrange our car pools? Take your turn once a week and escort the group to and from school. Why is that so completely foreign to us in today’s nanny state?
And here’s another one. Fawn Lunde’s best friend is an overweight bloodhound. “Grossly obese” as the La Crosse animal control officer put it. Ultimately Tobias (the bloodhound) was diagnosed with a thyroid problem and has begun medication that has already helped him lose 9 pounds. And now animal control is checking on Ms. Lunde’s finances to be sure she can afford Tobias’ treatment.
Yes. We must be caring, compassionate masters of man’s best friend. But is it the city that tells you your dog is too fat?
And is it the legislature's job to bring the Packers and Badgers into our homes? Geez.
The strict constructionists among us would remind us of our Constitution’s 9th and 10th amendments: Amendment IX The enumeration in the Constitution of certain rights shall not be construed to deny or disparage others retained by the people.
Amendment X The powers not delegated to the United States by the constitution, nor prohibited by it or the States, are reserved to the States respectively, or to the people. (Emphases are mine.)
Or a portion of that widely known paragraph of “cannots,” often attributed to Abraham Lincoln (but in reality penned by Reverend William John Henry Boetcker in 1916):You cannot build character and courage by taking away a man’s initiative and independence. You cannot help men permanently by doing for them what they could and should do for themselves.
Or this, from 2 Thessalonians 3:10: For even when we were with you, we gave you this rule: “If a man will not work, he shall not eat.”
Well, you know the drill. Enough already with city, state and federal programs providing services we should be providing for ourselves – or receiving from our friends and families. Enough.
COMMENTS
Government - at all levels - create these non-sensical programs because they can. They are not starved for revenue; lacking a tight budget they never have to DISCERN what to do and what not to do. They just write the checks, hire the bureaucrats, and then pat themselves on the back.

Along with all you wrote here, i have been amazed at how socialist Wisconsin has become, how so many people seem to rely on and expect the government, local and national to cater their every need. It also seems that some people are fed up with the government trying to do everything. So maybe we will be able to break this trend soon...

I totally agree that people rely on the government too much for things they can really handle themselves. For example, why should all those trucks come around our neighborhoods and pick up trash and recyclables when we can just as easily haul those bags to the landfill ourselves? Why have libraries when Barnes & Noble has such comfy chairs to sit and read, AND a Starbucks? I mean, most common people just use the libraries to rent DVDs, and there's a perfectly good Blockbuster store up the street for that! And what about fire departments... aren't those garden hoses attached to our houses for a reason? And why have police departments when there's pepper spray for self protection and homeowners insurance for stolen goods? Of course I'm being facetious. I just think its a matter of perspective. What seems like a worthy expenditure to one seems totally absurd to another who doesn't have a use for it. That's why I think it's not really all that likely that you'll ever see an end to EVERYTHING you don't agree with. So here's the question Mark - just where would you draw the line? I draw it at Walk to School programs, keeping your dog slim and disposing of outdated meds. JE
