Musings: Caucus day, garbage day, complaint day, sacred day

Well, today’s the day Iowans have been waiting for – after which their phones just may stay quiet all day and the media won’t be stationed everywhere they look. FoxPolitics News typically includes links to articles on the presidential campaign or other national politics when the news could directly affect Wisconsin politics and policy. Certainly there’s an argument that the Iowa caucuses affect Wisconsin politics – but at this point on the calendar, it’s pretty indirect. As a result, FP News hasn’t covered the presidential campaign much since Tommy dropped out. Today you’ll find a couple links, – but, FoxPolitics News will continue to stick pretty much to what’s going on in policy and political news in the state of Wisconsin. Here’s an interesting twist – Newt Gingrich not in Iowa, but, in Iowa, is promoting the “tri-partisan” “Platform of the American People.”

Given today is caucus day (and lots of folks are “frustrated by the influence wielded by Iowa and NH”), it’s a good time to resurrect my recommendation for the primary calendar. Ok, ok, Iowa and New Hampshire can keep going first, but then after that, the state with the highest voter turnout could be next – and the rest of the states ordered by decreasing voter turnout numbers in the last presidential election. Wisconsin would fare well in that scenario, second only to Minnesota in voter turnout in 2004.

One sign of the housing turmoil close to home
A friend checked condos for sale the other day. In the Appleton/Grand Chute MLS geographical area, 291 were listed for sale. 107 of those were in the failing Richmond Terrace just outside of downtown. (Of the 147 units in Richmond Terrace, 107 are listed for sale with MLS. Wow.)

    Complaint line? What complaint line?
Sorry Steve... Couldn't help noticing comments in the Oshkosh Northwestern yesterday about your bill that would establish a complaint line for residents to call to report “fraud, waste and mismanagement in state government.” I know it’s not the glamorous side of the job, but shouldn’t we be calling our representatives about that kind of stuff? And/or the D.A.’s office?

    ZERO Landfill Waste???
Did you see this garbage article in FoxPolitics News yesterday? Can you imagine? Seattle, San Francisco, and now Austin, are working toward eliminating the need for a landfill. Apparently this is the new U.N. standard – and Austin is aiming to reach it by 2040. Geez.

And lastly, one last (?), nice, mention of Christmas
FoxPolitics reader Dick Kendall calls attention to Hobby Lobby, located on Casaloma, north of College Avenue in Grand Chute. Many of you may know that Hobby Lobby stores throughout the country are not open on Sundays to honor the Sabbath. As Dick shares, on Christmas Day, in the Appleton Post-Crescent and other major newspapers across the U.S., Hobby Lobby ran a full page ad proclaiming the Gospel and the joy proclaimed in Bethlehem that day. See the ad – and the corporation’s explanation of its “Holiday Messages” over the last 10 years.

    COMMENTS

Thanks for the note about Hobby Lobby. I need a new hobby----and now I know where I am going to find it.

It is good to seem people like Dick Kendall stand strong and tall for what he believes in.
