The Troha sentencing, Doyle and that $200K

Update, 3/7/08: Troha's sentenced to 6 months probation, no fine but a suggestion he contribute to a charity.

So, no more “How long until Brett retires” office pools? Here are a couple more for you…

Given that Dennis Troha (apparently very helpfully) squawked with federal prosecutors, how long will his sentence be when it’s handed down tomorrow?

And as important, when will Governor Doyle return the dang money?

    Some clues:

    • March, 2007: Troha charged with felony wire fraud in a series of donations to Governor Doyle, and for making false statements to the FBI. Doyle says he’ll return $200,000 in campaign contributions from Troha and family members, if Troha is convicted. [Remember this part…]
    • June, 2007: Troha admitted to two misdemeanor violations of campaign laws; felony charges of illegally funneling donations to Governor Doyle are dismissed. [Remember this part….]
    • The WI Democratic Party disposed of $25,000 of $90,000 it received from Troha and his family. [partially the right thing to do…]
    • Rep. Ryan has returned Troha-tainted money - $3,750 from John Erickson, $58,802 from Troha, family members and associates. [fully the right thing to do…]
    • Troha’s promise of cooperation brought immunity from further prosecution and a recommended light sentence.
    • Federal prosecutors have since indicted John Erickson, Achille Infusino and Kenosha County Exec Allan Kehl. [Whose next? Fred Dooley’s great research…]
    • Maximum sentence for misdemeanor violations is 2 years and $200,000 in fines; minimum sentence is said to be 10 months, and could be on electronic monitors or in a halfway house.

So, when Troha’s sentence comes down Friday, what will it be?
Where/how will Troha be directed to serve it?

Ok, now the more important office pool…
When will the Governor do the right thing and give the gosh darn money back?

Remember that Troha was indicted on felony charges surrounding Doyle campaign contributions.
But Troha's misdemeanor (What?? Outrageous!!!) convictions skirt Doyle. Based on plea agreements, the convictions are on counts of illegal donations to the Democratic Party and President Bush.

Was all that money donated to the Democratic Party intended to go to Doyle? Yes.
Is Doyle’s $200,000 tainted money? Of course it is.
Technically, was Troha convicted for illegal campaign contributions to Governor Doyle? Well, “what is the meaning of the word ‘Is?’” Geeez.

Guv, could you maybe use the grand occasion of the Troha sentencing to donate the $200K to Wisconsin’s huge revenue disparity problem?

    COMMENTS

At what point in time, Jo, are we going to accept that private money – ANY private money – that is used to finance our public electoral system is corrupting.

I’m confident that Troha didn’t give money without knowing that he was ultimately going to receive government – read that, Doyle – financial favors in return. No more than Philip Morris didn’t expect the same when they gave Tommy $160,000 and financed two international vacations and multiple trips to Badger’s ballgames. It’s called “return on investment.”

With full public funding of campaigns, none of the above would have occurred. And at $5 per taxpayer per year we’d cut most or all of the $1300 per taxpayer in legislative giveaways. Budgets will become balanced and taxes will go down considerably.

There is a heavy price to pay for a corrupt political system. Just ask the Mexicans how they like theirs.

The state legislature has an opportunity to clean up the system, but will they?
