Joe Martin the best candidate in Appleton's 8th

Joe Martin’s campaign brochure mentions a car accident in the spring of 2000 that “although it took away my ability to walk… did not take away my ability to represent you effectively.” The front of the brochure pictures Martin motoring across the Olde Oneida Street bridge in his wheel chair. A caption beneath the photo says “I’ll ‘Stand up’ for Change.”

This guy is tough. And I love it.

He’s also a fiscal conservative. I love that too. He speaks of collaboration to create real cost savings “and better service to Appleton residents.”

Martin currently serves on the City of Appleton Planning Commission and often attends numerous additional city government committee meetings.

    Martin writes that he will

Work to develop city government openness/transparency and efforts to control spending; conserve energy and protect the environment; develop open communications with all 8th District residents; work with police, local schools and social service agencies to unite in addressing crime in Appleton; collaborate with other communities to develop effective ways of lowering cost for our taxpayers; maintain upkeep of our infrastructure within older neighborhoods; work with city staff and fellow alderpersons in a proactive way to best serve the city.

    Good. Very good.

I served on the Common Council with Martin’s opponent, incumbent Alderperson Richard Thompson for many years. I continue to appreciate his smile, kind words and courtesy when we meet on city streets or in City Hall. I do not, however, agree with his politics. Rich is not a consensus builder. In the years I worked with him, I never saw a concern for spending; it seemed Rich never met a project he didn’t like. When I shared serious, well-researched problems about the water plant, Rich publicly stated these were just a few small blips the Utility needed to get through. (Wrong.)

Rich is very strongly anti-town and most probably would never support collaborative work with an adjoining town.

Joe Martin’s ability to work together with staff and alderpersons has been well demonstrated. He will bring fresh, informed and badly needed fiscally conservative principles to Appleton’s Common Council. If you live in the 8th, do all you can to support him. And most certainly, go to the polls and vote April 1. (Your polling place is Riverview Evangelical Lutheran Church, 136 W. Seymour Street.)

    COMMENTS

Joe Martin is an intelligent, sincere
person who has overcome serious physical problems and is moving forward. I hope the voters of the
City of Appleton district he resides
in put him to work for them. i have
worked with Joe previously and am
confident he would represent them well.

I do know Joe Martin, but my wife certainly knows Joe Martin as a terrific person in all respects. She is a fine judge of characater! It would be just great if Joe Martin topples Mr. Thompson for all of Appleton. Your opponent is a key player in the water plant disaster.

To put things into perspective, the initial capital budget for the water plant is about 4 new police stations! The water plant capital cost overrun is good for about 2 additional police stations. The higher water usage fees should be good for a few more police stations. Its only money!
