Important votes Tuesday, including Appleton Common Council
First, the Frankenstein Veto. That’s a slam-dunk. Vote Yes to ban a Wisconsin governor’s ability to use partial vetoes on legislation. The referendum follows a 94-1 vote by the Assembly to approve the measure. It’s not the perfect fix, but surely is a start. Vote YES.
City of Appleton Common Council. This is really important. Because the Mayor of Appleton, to the chagrin of the new crop of write-ins, will most likely continue to be Tim Hanna (nevertheless, see below…), it’s more important than ever that we elect a Council that will question fiscal goings-on in the city and force the mayor to be accountable (e.g., that damn water plant…), to be responsive, to make timely decisions and to lead in concert with the Council. These votes are critical and I strongly and confidently commend your vote for these men:
District 2 Incumbent Graeme Rattray
District 4 Incumbent Jeffery Lutz Opposed by Ed Spang. Before his defeat 4 years ago, Spang aided and abetted the efforts of the former Director of Utilities. As a long time member of the Utilities Committee, Spang bears much responsibility for the very expensive, error-plagued and vastly underperforming Appleton Water Plant.
District 8 Challenger Joe Martin (a remarkable candidate)
District 10 Challenger Craig Lutz
District 14 Chris Croatt Chris is working very hard on this campaign – and will continue to work hard as your alderperson. He will communicate with you!!!
Mayor, City of Appleton. This is complicated. I strongly advocated for opposition to incumbent Mayor Tim Hanna. Though I was his campaign manager in the election that led to Tim’s first term as mayor (1996), I have since, been a frequent and outspoken critic of, shall we say, his leadership (or lack thereof) style.
I wrote earlier about Jon Gabrielson, a senior in high school, and said I could vote for Jon, essentially as a protest vote. Since that piece, Steve Olson, a long time city worker, has also registered as a write-in. I know Steve from my Council days; he is very well-intentioned, knowledgeable, a sincere worker and a proud citizen of Appleton.
In addition to the registered write-ins, consider experience. Three qualified, sitting aldermen were simply unable, for a number of important, valid personal reasons, to commit to run in this election by the early January deadline for filing campaign papers. I would vote (via write-in) for any of them; Alderman Clemons is the most experienced, having starting serving on the Council the same year as I, 1993.
- Alderman Ed Baranowski
- Alderman Jim Clemons
- Alderman Curt Konetzke
Outagamie County Board, District 12. Mike Thomas FoxPolitics News has looked at just one race here. Both candidates are friends of mine. I served with Dick Gosse, the incumbent, for several years on the Appleton Common Council. He is a fine, kind man with a heart for community service. Mike Thomas has served on the County Board in the past and was defeated by Dr. Gosse the last time around. I believe Thomas’ fiscal conservatism is best for the voters of Outagamie County and northeast Wisconsin. I believe too, in Thomas’ strong belief in the importance of counties looking at privatization of nursing homes. Thomas has asked for an immediate investigation of the potential for selling Brewster Village, as Outagamie County currently subsidizes the health center to the tune of $4 million annually.
Outagamie County Circuit Court Judge, Branch 2 Incumbent Judge Nancy Krueger Nancy Krueger is a very competent professional and experienced litigator, and brings that wisdom to the bench. The attacks of her opponent have been inaccurate and uncalled for.
State Supreme Court. Judge Michael Gableman This has not been a pretty race. We are privileged in Wisconsin to vote for our Supreme Court justices – and the reason we vote for justices is because different judges interpret the law and the state constitution differently. As I wrote in an earlier piece “This election is about judicial interpretation and judicial activism.” And yes, it’s about issues – and it’s about public discussion of each candidate’s record. Judge Michael Gableman is the ‘conservative’ judge in this race – and the man most likely to interpret the law and the constitution narrowly, with modesty and restraint.
COMMENTS
Jo:
you did not touch upon the Metropulous/Schneider match up----or did I miss it.

Regarding tomorrow's election, you give your support to incumbent Council member Graeme Rattray. Although I am not very active in community affairs, I do watch some of the cable rebroadcasts of the Common Council Meetings. I have not seen Mr. Rattray speak up at any meetings, nor heard him speak out in any other forums, and have noticed his absence from Council meetings on many occasions during voting. I question the representation that he provides.

Jo, your lack of a endorsement for Outagamie Branch 3 speaks volumes, let me take this opportunity to say "Vote for Metropulos". Thank you.

Bruce Sherman (Mon Mar 31 10:16:32 2008)
I'm voting for Judge Krueger, the incumbent, because she is highly qualified professionally (she has practiced the widest variety of areas of law), and she has the temperament suited to being a judge who will truly serve the public, and with respect. Throughout her campaign, she has maintained the kind of dignity that her challenger lacks.
Her challenger's actions and words show that he has no respect for the residents of our county, the voters, or the judicial system when he engages in dirty politics, distortion, and lies. It is shameful.
We deserve better than that. Please vote for ethics and honor. Vote for Judge Krueger.
