$uch a simple thing as a sign here and there

Who needs help finding their way around the Fox Cities? I do, I do!!

The other day I had to ask folks at a meeting how to get from downtown Kaukauna to Kimberly. That doesn’t mean I’m not a well-seasoned Fox Valley babe, it just means I couldn’t get my head around where I was and how the two communities were situated, one to the other. (Retraced a fun and beautiful route along the river – natives know what I’m talking about…)

So the point of all this is that when some of us have a hard time, what about visitors? Most specifically, paying visitors – i.e., shoppers and tourists.

As part of what I call a “tourism effectiveness” assessment way back in 2004, “secret shoppers” were hired by the Fox Cities Convention and Visitors Bureau (the CVB). These stealth visitors, plain and simple, found the Fox Cities difficult to get around in. (I know, you’re shocked…) Signs identifying locations and attractions were small and hard to read, and varied greatly from one community to the next. That’s not even mentioning how hard it is to figure out what community you’re in in the first place!

Since then, the CVB has studied the issue and completed a complex system of design and placement for signs, specific to all of its 18 Fox Valley member communities.

So (Public Service Announcement...!) here’s the deal
The overriding goal of the CVB’s Signage and Wayfinding Initiative is to increase the number of people who visit/use the Fox Cities area. (Did I mention shoppers?)

And here’s the best part. The Convention and Visitors Bureau will foot up to half the bill for all of its 18 member communities IF they apply for a grant by May 1. Two weeks to free money that will get more and more of these great signs up and working around here.

The grant application is here – as well as everything you ever wanted to know about the sign program and examples of the colorful, helpful signs. For information, call the CVB at (920) 734-3358 and talk with Executive Director Lynn Peters.

Many of the region’s largest communities are applying – it’s time now for all to get on board.

More money for the Heart of the Valley….
As a special incentive, the Heart of the Valley Chamber of Commerce will further subsidize signage for its members. Call the Chamber immediately for information, (920) 766-1616. (Heart of the Valley communities also served by the Convention and Visitors Bureau include Combined Locks, Kaukauna, Kimberly, Little Chute and Sherwood.)

CVB member communities include Appleton, Buchanan, Clayton, Combined Locks, Freedom, Grand Chute, Greenville, Harrison, Kaukauna (City), Kimberly, Little Chute, Menasha (City), Menasha (Town), Neenah (City), Neenah (Town), Sherwood, Vandenbroek, Woodville.
