Republican Jim Steineke running in the 5th Assembly District
I’ve taken my pokes at Democrat Rep. Tom Nelson, in the 5th Assembly district, which covers most of Kaukauna, Little Chute and Seymour and the swath of towns and villages in between. Though currently represented by a Democrat, the numbers show the 5th to be a majority Republican and conservative district. Undeniably, Tom has worked the district really hard in the last four years.
As Chair of the Vandenbroek Town Board and recently re-elected as a Supervisor on the Outagamie County Board, Jim Steineke’s got his fingers in lots of pies as well, and seems to know the lay of the land. So he’s throwing his hat in the ring and challenging the incumbent in the 5th. I asked Steineke about running up against Nelson’s seemingly high level of activity in the district.
Tom has certainly done a very good job of making himself visible. However, I do not believe that just showing up is good enough. You still need to follow through in Madison and vote the way your constituents expect you to vote. Tom hasn’t been doing that. He has consistently voted to raise taxes and fees at a time when our families can least afford it. I pledge that I will not vote to raise taxes or fees.
Steineke’s announcement of his candidacy today mentions the need to get local and state economies going in the right direction, lowering the tax burden on families and small businesses, making government more efficient and lowering the cost of health care by empowering patients and families.
Our current representative seems to do a great job shaking hands and getting his name in the paper, but I don’t see him taking on the big issues of the day and providing solutions to the problems that are affecting people’s ability to put food on the table. When I am elected I will push to lower the tax burden, lessen regulation on business, and end the tax and spend policies that have gotten us in this mess.
Well hear hear. I’m all for that. Steineke, in a conservative district, says he has always voted down budgets that increases taxes – and has even been able to lower the tax levy in Vandenbroek.
Steineke says his plan to serve the people of the district is quite simple. “I will listen to their concerns, be there to help when the need arises and vote with their best interests in mind each and every time. I will never forget I am representing my friends and neighbors – all the people in the 5th District.”
Isn’t that the essence of it? Great.
Steineke has been married to Heather for seven years. They have two young sons, Carter (4) and Sawyer (2).
Tom Nelson is a great, young guy. But gosh, the family thing kind of bugs me. As far as I know, he’s not had to put food on the table for anyone but himself. Born several years after I graduated from college (sheeesh), Tom was elected to the legislature pretty much right out of college – and supports only himself with his legislator’s salary.
In contrast, Jim Steineke won’t be sleeping much in the months running up to November. He’s got that family to watch over (though Heather I’m sure, has committed to be both mom and dad for much of that time!) and he’s got to keep bringing in a paycheck (working as regional manager for an investment company).
But be assured, Steineke will be out there shaking hands and introducing himself. I love it. Perhaps you can offer him a cup of joe, your thoughts about what's going on in Madison, and perhaps even your support.
COMMENTS
Jo, I guess that based on the "never had a job outside of government test" you can't support John Gard?

I took my parents back to our home town of Seymour so they could take part in the Memorial Day celebration. My father rode in the parade with WWII and other veterans. Mom rode with Legion Auxiliary members, and although I am a veteran I walked downtown to watch the parade.
As the parade was coming down the street a young State Assemblyman displacing his name tag was walking about 25 yards in front the Legion color guard along the side of the street smiling, introducing himself, and shaking everyone’s hand. When he came to me I asked if he was a veteran, and he replied he wasn’t. I thought once again we have a politician out getting votes on the blood of America’s Servicemen.
I would request to all politicians that if you are a veteran, leave your name tag at home and march with a veterans group that you belong to. If you are not a veteran, bring your family, stand on the side of the street and show respect for our nation’s flag and the men and women who have fought to protect your freedoms.
Explain to your family why we celebrate Memorial Day. Which for your knowledge is to honor our service members who gave their lives in battle, not to gather an audience so you can get votes!

One of the things I've always wondered is what happened in 2004 to get Nelson in that seat in the first place. No doubt Nelson has the papermaker unions (what's left of them) on his side, but if memory serves, it came down to a lot of dirt about tax returns and mud, and the GB media going after Becky Weber hard while giving Nelson a pass.
Since then, Nelson's been protected by State Sen. Hansen and Doyle. He's a liberal in a conservative district (Heck, it's Mark Green's old seat!) and he needs to get go.
Of course, Doyle will then give him a job in his Administration (with higher pay than the Assembly gig) as a severence package. So, he's not leaving Madison. After all, he's seems to like it there.

You mentioned fingers in the pie and I'll say hear, hear that.
Apparently there are now two Republican candidates running for congressional district office who also hold a local town position and another at the county.
What's wrong with this picture?
First of all it shows that the state legislature does so little work and has such a scant docket of activities that these local boys can pad out their incomes with an occasional trip to Madison to take care of the state's business... too.
Why do I find this so distasteful?
And why don't you?

Oddly enough Kevin for someone with your experience you should know that two things above most are true.
1) If you out work your opponent you will probably win.
2) If you go negative in a libelous manner you will probably get called out by your opponent and it won't go to well.
Numbers don't matter if you work hard. Ask Brett Davis.
