    Prison Guard Overtime

The Prison Guard "game" for inflating Gross Income is just the latest in policy "give away" under our bloated State Retirement System. This isn't an "abuse of the policy" on sick leave: It's LARCENY!

And, as usual, we the Taxpayers get stuck with the tab.

This has been reported in other areas of Law Enforcement over the years. In addition to the payroll excesses, the greater impact is on the Pension benefit. The Game they play is to inflate Gross Earnings in the last three (3) years prior to Retirement. Since the Pension Benefit is based on the average of the last three (3) years, earnings, these Public Servants take advantage of this loop hole to artificially inflate their final average earnings, and thus their monthly Pension benefit FOR LIFE! Thus WE PAY TWICE!

To add insult to injury, this Union President vainly attempts to justify and defend this practice. When are the Democrats in power going to stop their thinly veiled efforts to provide "pay back" for Public Sector Union Buddies??

    COMMENTS

Those involved in inflating sick pay should be disciplined. The legislature should hire more officers or put fewer people in prison so the need for overtime is reduced and guards are protected. The problem has spanned several administrations and several legislatures. This administration and this legislature however should do something about it.

    Glen:
Good to see you are still out there. I worked with you when you were VP of Human Resources at Thilmany. The problem goes deeper here than the prison guards. This happens all the time with other law enforcement personnel in the public sector and yes it is "larceny" but is common practice as a "perk" or "right" of this group. The only way to change it is to have the management group aggressively address it. This would mean that Sheriffs, County Executives, Police Chiefs, would have to address this issue like managers in the private sector. However, they are afraid to cause any conflict with the unions and just go along with the policy. The only way you would change this is to vote people into office that would address this. Most of the voters don't even know this is going on and it should be a part of an overall debate between potential candidates. Otherwise we will get what we always got.
