    Take the "PCB Plunge!"

Calling all givers! Here’s your chance to put your name on a city landmark!

An article in The Sheboygan Press Monday (included in FoxPolitics News that day) talked about the City of Sheboygan’s Naming Rights Committee. The Committee developed a policy allowing for naming rights in exchange for community sponsorships to help build major city projects.

The city has seen naming rights work successfully for the Sheboygan Area School District - and what they’re looking for is no chump change – minimum contributions of $25 grand. Individuals or corporations honored must be “of exemplary moral character, have made an outstanding contribution to the community or have displayed outstanding leadership.” (Does that mean if you’ve made an “outstanding contribution” you need not be of moral character? Hmmm.) The policy speaks primarily to new projects, but public works can be renamed if “compelling reasons” are brought forward and ¾ of the council approves.

So think of it. We could have our very own “San Diego County Credit Union Poinsettia Bowl” or “Chick-fil-A Bowl”. (Thank heavens we still have the good old Rose and Orange Bowls.) Or maybe we could even have a Monster Park!

Here in Appleton, College Avenue could become Flanagan’s Way. And the proposed Whitewater Rafting Course could be dubbed the “PCB Plunge.” It’s hard to envision all the possibilities!

Seriously – I can give some credit to a municipality looking for creative sources of new revenue. But here’s the question … is this the appropriate way to handle a city budget?

How much more money can be eked out of our communities? How many different names are there for a tax?

What committees really need to spend time on is reducing spending. Actually cutting back on significant programs. Oh sure, there may still be efficiencies to squeeze out of the system – but not much - the time of finding “fraud and waste” is long gone.

Spending. It’s the spending. It’s programs you and I demand that we’ve come to expect government to perform. It’s street standards and garbage pickup standards and recreation standards that we demand. No. It’s not time for new, creative, innovative, flashy sources of revenue. It’s time to take a serious look at trimming programs and reducing spending.

    COMMENTS

    Great article and opinion Jo.

I am very concerned about the proposed Appleton West athletic field expansion. There are ideal alternatives, yet people are plugging along at destroying a neighborhood.
