    Fred Dooley: Wisconsin Proud

Time and time again when Wisconsin is faced with a crisis its citizens respond in a manner to make us all proud.

In the past week our state was faced with major flooding and in some ways I think it will take another week or two for us to understand just how big the impact on our citizens actually was. While we spent the last week dealing with the immediate impact, over the next week we’ll see more and more opportunities to help our fellow citizens through drives for badly needed cash and supplies.

Wisconsin will answer that call, it always does.

Governor Doyle had a major lapse in judgment last Tuesday when he appeared at a $1,250 per person golf outing to raise money for himself. No one is really sure if Doyle attended the whole event, or just a portion thereof. For me, it doesn’t really matter if he spent 5 minutes, two hours or the whole day at that event. One day after Lake Delton vanished, the Governor of Wisconsin was playing politics instead of working for the people of Wisconsin.

It truly is a shame the Governor made the choice to attend this political event As a conservative who rarely agrees with Jim, I have to admit that I have been impressed with Doyle’s reaction to these events with the exclusion of the Tuesday fund-raiser. Governor Doyle has been providing good visible leadership and it would appear he has been in contact with Federal officials to keep them informed as to the needs of the state. It truly is a shame that by putting politics first he sullied an otherwise admirable week of work.

Not surprisingly the liberal state press gave the Governor a pass on his bad behavior. Can you imagine the outcry from The Milwaukee Journal Sentinel if Scott Walker had attended a fund-raiser over the last week?

Putting aside the issue of Jim Doyle, the people of Wisconsin will provide a shining example, once again, about how to react in a catastrophe. Neighbor will help neighbor just as they always have.

    Hang in there Wisconsin.
