Surprise. Decisions made through the "prism" of re-election
Politics really bugs me sometimes. Mostly it bugs me when you just can’t get to the truth. In an interview with AP, Governor Doyle’s Chief of Staff was candid. Here’s one question and its answer, as it appeared in the Rhinelander Daily News:
AP: How do you feel the governor's second term will differ from his first?
[Susan] Goodwin: There's just always a feeling in that first term, as you're thinking about getting elected, everything is run through that prism. We don't have to look at everything through that prism any more. We want to work with the Legislature. We want to do it in a bipartisan basis. It's not because we're worried about how that's going to look to the people, to the voters, to the media, it's because it's the right thing to do and that's what we want to do, is work in a bipartisan way. ... I think that's going to give a different character to the whole second term that will actually help us govern better. Maybe it will help the public see it differently, because they're not always weighing it with, 'Oh, he's just doing this to get re-elected, or to help his election.' That isn't why he's doing it. He hasn't even decided if he's going to run for re-election. [Emphasis added]
Ok, we all know it goes on. Everything is run through the “prism” of getting re-elected instead of what’s “the right thing to do.” The price of democracy? I guess. Grrrrr.
And then in the same week the Fox Valley enclave of Menasha nixed televising its committee and council meetings.
What do Goodwin and the Menasha Common Council have to do with each other, you say?
Well, it’s darn hard to get an inside view at what really happens in government. So anything anybody can do to expose what goes on, they’ve just got to do it.
Ok, I’m not so naďve as to think a council meeting bares all that really happens in government. But in a city of 17,000 or so, you’re getting pretty close.
Lots of reasons were offered by 4 of 8 city aldermen why televising doesn’t work. And yes, it costs money - and I never consider spending taxes lightly. (In the Fox Cities we are really blessed to have Tom Frantz and his UW-Fox Valley media classes to do taping for us. Yes, it costs money – but it’s pretty darned reasonable.)
And ok, the ratings won’t hit the top of the charts. But whatever the reasons, you address the reasons, you take one for the gipper and you make it work.
As they say, governing is messy – like making sausage. You probably don’t want to see sausage being made - but any opportunity you have to watch a government in action (or maybe to even get involved yourself – there’s still time before Jan. 2 to get those nomination papers signed!) - take it.
Those wanting insight into what goes on at Menasha Council meetings can access at least two aldermen’s web sites that report on the goings-on: Don Merkes, www.donmerkes.com and Sue Wismeski, www.suewisneski.com

**There's just always a feeling in that first term, as you're thinking about getting elected, everything is run through that prism. We don't have to look at everything through that prism any more. ** This is so laughable it makes my face hurt. Some years ago we voted to extend the governor's term from two to four years just to avoid this very thing. I have a hunch Ms. Goodwin would be saying the same thing if Gov. Doyle had had a 6 year term. His four years has been nothing but a series of vetoes and money grubbing for his political hope chest. I don't see much chance of this 4 years being any different. I don't believe there's any transparency regarding the governor, there's simply too much spin going on at all times. P.S. I'd like to know what the actual cost is to tape the council meetings
Editor's Note: It's my understanding televising charges are $175/hour, and result in a budget item between $15,000 and $20,000.
