    Burri: Lawton for Governor?

Anybody up for Governor Barbara Lawton? I am. It’ll be a very nice change of pace.

It's become much more possible, too, since Barack Obama became his party’s nominee for President. That’s because current Governor Jim Doyle has been such a loyal Obama supporter – he signed onto Obama’s campaign before it was cool; before the writing was on the wall. Doyle endorsed Obama a month before Wisconsin’s primary, and actively campaigned for him as the race tightened up.

So, obviously, should Obama win in November, it’s entirely possible Doyle will do a Thompson and exchange the Governor’s Mansion for a Cabinet post. And, if he does…

    Governor Barbara Lawton.

In that case, the Democrats will, probably, have their nominee for Governor in 2010. And if all this speculation is – as such speculation has a tendency to be – dead wrong, well, there’s always the chance Doyle will call it a career in 2010. Decline to run for a third term.

I kind of doubt it, but there it is.

In that case, Democrats won’t have their nominee. But as Lawton herself has said, she’ll be one of the candidates.

Personally, I'd very much enjoy a Lawton candidacy. Heck, I’ll even campaign for her.

No, not because her relative inexperience and Garveyesque liberalism will make her an easy mark. No, not because we might get to see Democrat operatives Hillaryize another female candidate.

We happily anticipate these things, yes, but they’re not the reason. The reason: Lawton supports a conservative, supply-and-demand approach to economic growth.

Wisconsin couldn't lure a Hollywood production if not for the upcoming tax breaks, Lawton said. "Without it, they never would have come knocking on our door," she said. "They wouldn't have given us a second glance."

"Public Enemies," with a budget of $100 million to $200 million, could generate revenue for local caterers and restaurants. And afterward, the scene locations could become tourist destinations like the cornfield baseball diamond that continues to draw visitors to Dyersville, Iowa, nearly two decades after the release of "Field of Dreams."

"This is an industry that has a real impact on creating jobs," Lawton said.

Testify, sister! Tax cuts work, and Barbara Lawton knows it!

I’ve got the ad campaign worked out already. Barbara Lawton: rejuvenating Wisconsin industry. Barbara Lawton: Creating jobs by cutting taxes. Barbara Lawton: Because progressive doesn’t have to mean dim.

Would it work? Of course not

C’mon, remember all the shame we heaped on Governor Jim “I will not raise taxes” Doyle? He left himself less wiggle room on taxes than Barack Obama did on public financing, and they both backed out on those faster than Bill Clinton when he launched that retroactive middle-class tax hike back in 1993.

Lawton, when she runs, if she’s nominated, if she becomes Governor, will do exactly the same. The Hollywood tax cut won’t be explained away – it’ll simply be ignored. Airbrushed out of the picture like Trotsky. Never happened.

    Won't that be fun.

There is, of course, more to a potential Lawton governorship than my amusement. It seems a good bet – likely, even – that the Obama and/or McCain campaigns will choose a woman as a running mate, to mollify or take advantage of the simmering Hillary factor.

Today, Lawton isn’t even on the extra-long potential Veep list. But. Put her in the Governor’s chair for two, four, maybe six years, and…

A highly liberal woman with executive experience? She’d be a natural Veep choice in ’12 or ’16, except…heck, Democrats elect Presidents with less experience.

Huh. Maybe I don't like this scenario, after all.
