Kagen and Reagan in the same breath?

Well, Rep. Kagen apologized this weekend in newspapers across the state, labeling his gaff "humor." Hmm..

Just last Sunday, the New York Times’ David Greenberg wrote an article about “that great American oratorical tradition: the presidential mea culpa….Figuring out how to acknowledge failure without seeming like a failure is a time-honored occupational hazard of politics.” Greenberg illustrated his point with the Presidential quotes below.

Eisenhower, refusing to admit U-2 shot down: “These activities have their own rules and methods of concealment, which seek to mislead and obscure.”

John F. Kennedy on the Bay of Pigs: “Victory has a hundred fathers, but defeat is an orphan…I am the responsible officer of the government.”

Nixon on Watergate: “I regret deeply any injuries that may have been done in the course of the events that led to this decision.”

Reagan on Iran-Contra: “A few months ago I told the American people I did not trade arms for hostages. My heart and my best intentions still tell me that’s true, but the facts and the evidence tell me it is not.”

Clinton on Lewinsky: “I misled people, including even my wife. I deeply regret that.”

Bush I on breaking Tax Pledge: “I did it, and I regret it and I regret it.”

And of course, Bush II on Iraq, in his speech to us January 10, 2007: “Where mistakes have been made, the responsibility lies with me….” (We await what the State of the Union brings....)

Kudos to Representative Kagen, who joins the ranks of leaders of the free world.

Rep. Kagen on White House Reception for Freshman Legislators: “I apologize for handling this situation as I did…. My mishandled attempt at humor wasn’t delivered or received well. It won’t happen again.”

I'm still confused. Is he a liar or a man with bad manners?
