Grothman: Alumni must fight UW unionizing effort

(Madison)… Senator Glenn Grothman (R-West Bend) calls upon the Joint Finance Committee to remove provisions in Governor Doyle’s budget allowing for unionization of faculty and academic staff in the UW System.

“It is shocking that in a profession in which independence of thought should be required that we would allow a majority of faculty to force a minority into an organization in which all members would have to contribute monetarily,” said Grothman. “Common sense will tell you that negotiations over time will lead to higher costs, less workload for faculty members and more classes taught by teaching assistants. Even more disconcerting is that independent-minded people will be less likely to join our University System as they would be offended to be forced into a union.”

Currently, no Big Ten university is unionized. The Ohio University Committee for Independent Faculty recently released a study showing that unionization of faculty correlates negatively with national rankings.

“I am particularly irritated that so far neither the Administration nor the Alumni Associations have gotten involved,” said Grothman, a UW alumnus. “They have no problem putting pressure on legislators when asking for more money for the University System claiming that money is necessary to maintain quality. However, when efforts are made to politicize the faculty and academic staff by forcing them into unions, the alumni groups and administration are silent.”

“I find it outlandish that UW Regent David Walsh and Chancellor Biddy Martin are willing to weigh in when it comes to the University performing abortions at five months but are apparently are too afraid to get involved in the controversy of their faculty being unionized,” noted Grothman. “I call upon all UW Alumni to tell their respective Alumni Associations to earn their keep by fighting this provision that is being fast-tracked through in our state budget. I see no reason why the UW Alumni Association should get any more money to exist if they are not going to fight this expensive and nonsensical agenda.”

“The unionization provision puts forth one more controversy into whether our education system is preparing a productive well-informed citizenry for tomorrow or is just an edifice set up to provide a bunch of well-educated people with well-compensated sinecures,” said Grothman.

Glenn Grothman is a Republican and represents the residents of the 20th Senate District.

"Controversy"? I thought it was settled--the universities' intent long has been to turn out UNeducated, malleable, comrades. Read "Profscam". It is no exaggeration.

IMHO, professionalism and unionism are completely at odds. Both at the state and national level, the Democrats are determined to impoverish our country with non-sensical regulations, such as this proposal, by undermining the value of the dollar, and by saddling our unborn great grandchildren with prosperity crushing debt.

Maybe we should get a constitutional amendment that a budget should be just that, rather than a catchall of bad legislation that might not otherwise survive the light of day.
