I missed the Tea Parties!
Very sadly, I missed the Tea Parties in Wisconsin, as one of my sisters and I are visiting my son and daughter in Denver this week. Thanks to my friend Paul Socha, who did a great job capturing the Appleton fete in photos. (Paul you did great without Mrs. B.) He reminds us that Jerry Bader was in attendance, so tune in to ‘TAQ (1360 AM) this morning to hear all about it (8:30 – 11).
Steve Eggleston said it best for me. “The theme of the day is that elections matter. It isn’t enough to be involved today; we need to be involved tomorrow, next week, next month, and next election.” And involved Steve was. He drove from Milwaukee, I’m assuming, to the Madison affair then to Appleton (Welcome to my place, Steve!) and estimated an attendance of 3,000, overflowing the seams at Michiels Fox Banquets downtown. Oh my!! I’ll second his thanks to Jim Steineke, and also to Michiels (and it’s neighbors – eek!) for allowing the group to congregate. Steve also links to several blogger accounts of the day in MadTown – including the guys who published great photos.
Jenny Espino, describing the event well in her Post-Crescent piece says “several hundred.” If someone else has thoughts as to the size of the Appleton crowd, I’d appreciate hearing about it. I’m not sure 3,000 could fit on Michiels’ parking lot, overflowing or not.
Really fun to read of the goings-on in Madison and elsewhere. Pictures galore. (See above.) Most news and blogger accounts mention the size of the MadTown crowd as “thousands.” Some, as the Wisconsin State Journal, (which is a good account of the rally) mention that the Capitol Police refused to estimate the size of the crowd:
Capitol police on the scene said a crowd estimate would be provided by the state Department of Administration, which answers to Doyle — one of the protesters’ chief targets. But DOA spokeswoman Linda Barth said the department would not issue an estimate, saying the Capitol police focus on keeping people safe at protests and have not done estimates since August 2008. At a rally in October 2007, the Capitol police did provide a crowd estimate. Bruce Redenz at Badger Blogger gave me a good laugh this early morning. “I’m not sure I have the facts to back this up, but I’m pretty sure this is the largest gathering ever in Madison at which no hookahs were smoked, nor tambourines played.”
Of course, the signs are the centerpiece of the action. Thousands and thousands of them around the country. Here are just a very few (without links, which would drive you crazy).
8 years old, $36,000 in debt. I sold our condo in Maui – now I can afford Wisconsin (cartoon). Don’t spread my wealth – spread my work ethic. Which one are you drinking? [Tea or Kool-Aid] Stop spending money like my ex-wife. Taxpayer:Sharecropper:Property of U.S. Government (t-shirt) How can we get those idiots with a job to pay more taxes? (comment by Dem. Donkey) You want my shirt too Jim? Welcome Back Carter (I loved it)
Here’s a post that pretty well summarizes the whining I read from the left. (Quick, what’s the definition of tasseography?) Very little protest action. Literally 3 guys in costume. (Thanks for that photo Lance. Great. Thanks too for the "Don't Tread on Me" Patriot pic.)
My sister and I agreed it was “a couple hundred” folks gathered on the steps of the state capitol here in Denver. Not nearly the excitement I’m reading about this morning. So thanks for the great stuff, Wisconsin.

COMMENTS
It was worth the 350 miles I drove yesterday. Since I was Twittering the Tea Parties, and my Blackjack doesn't work all too well in bright-sunlight conditions, I had to link to those that brought real cameras like Paul.

The “hundreds” stuff is crap. There were more people in Appleton last night than there were in Green Bay last month and we were told 1200 by police here. I stink at crowd estimates but no doubt upward of a thousand and maybe even as high as 2k, but I can’t say that with any certainty. But hundreds is nonsense!

Jerry (Thu Apr 16 08:24:15)
Hey Jo - We missed you last night. The numbers were closer to 2000, maybe a bit under based on the list of people we registered at the event. The most incomprehensible report on the event was from NBC26 who reported that "dozens" gathered in downtown Appleton. Jenny Espino also did a disservice in her reporting, making it look like it was a bunch of right-wingers there and everyone was bashing Democrats only. Every speaker we had mentioned both parties as the culprits. I mentioned it 3 times myself. Didn't see that in the article...

Jim Steineke (Thu Apr 16 11:05:41 2009)
Again, you are confused. Can you not tell objective views from whining?
If anything, I find this all rather humorous, all of these attempts to convince yourselves of your personal worldview.

Jim-
You do not suppose the media had an ulterior motive, do you?
Jo (and others):
One last chance for those of us who had to work or otherwise miss the tax day protests:
Sunday April 19, 3-5 PM
Friendship Park ( by the creek, N side of town on Hwy 13
Friendship, WI)
Bring your umbrella. There is also a pavilion if memory serves.
There will be a number of speakers, including yours truly.

Ken VanDoren (Thu Apr 16 22:32:47 2009)
Jo, we missed you at the Tea Party!
Thank you for the kind words. It just shows how important Mrs B is for me.
Hope you enjoyed Colorado but we need you back home.

Paul (Fri Apr 17 06:33:04 2009)
So, Capper, what happens when NOBODY has a job to pay for all the govt programs? Socialism works...until the money runs out.
