    Apparently Rep. Zigmunt needs help

Apparently Rep. Ted Zigmunt needs help wherever he can get it from his good ol’ Dem buddies in the legislature. After beating Republican incumbent and outspoken fiscal conservative Frank Lasee in the 2nd Assembly District (with hundreds of thousands of WEAC dollars), Assembly Dems apparently think the district is still a big problem – especially in one of its conservative pockets. Lo and behold, in this day and age of trying to fix a $6.6 billion (!!) deficit, little bitty Wrightstown in the southwest corner of Zigmunt’s district gets $46,000 for new recycling bins.

    What?

There was a bit of disagreement on the committee. I’d say Rep. Phil Montgomery had it right.
"Since when in a budget that's dealing with a nearly $7 billion hole do we buy personal items?" Montgomery said. "These are for individuals. Many of these individuals have million-dollar homes on the Fox River."

….Rep. Ted Zigmunt, a Francis Creek Democrat whose district includes Wrightstown, did not immediately return a message seeking comment. Spokesmen for the two Democratic co-chairs of the budget committee said they did not know who brought the issue to the panel for consideration.
Imagine that. Rep. Colon was defending somebody…
Rep. Pedro Colon, D-Milwaukee, was one of the committee members who voted to spend the money. It was included in a package directing money to a variety of communities for numerous programs.

"These are practical earmarks that help small communities in Wisconsin," Colon said Tuesday.
Same thing may be true in Democrat Rep. Andy Jorgenson's Jefferson County district. His constituents in the Town of Oakland got a generator earmarked into the state budget worth $10,000. Is it big bucks? Well, no. And it’s stimulus money – somebody else’s pocket? Oh geeez…

A few things here don’t pass the smell test.

    COMMENTS

For years, I have been saying that if we can not afford to pay for local services (including schools) locally, we can not afford them. I suppose that, if kept in check, a little socialism might be gotten away with. But the problem as I saw it years ago, is that socialism, or "something for nothing" is a progressive degenerative disease, that ultimately attacks the vitality of the whole system. Or as Frederic Bastiat put it, "Government is that great fiction by which everyone endeavors to live at the expense of everybody else." Not possible in the long run.

    Thanx for pointing this out.
