U.S. Rep. Tom Petri and Cap-and-Trade

On Monday, Dad29 reminded us that Rep. Tom Petri in the 6th Congressional District, was one of those Republicans House Speaker Nancy Pelosi reached out to for support of Waxman-Markey’s Cap and Trade legislation.  FoxPolitics News featured news yesterday from The Hill that a surprise deal would bring Waxman-Markey to the floor of the House “by the end of the week.”

In today’s edition of The Hill, Energy and Commerce Committee Chairman Henry Waxman (D-CA) and House Agriculture Committee Chairman Collin Peterson (D-MN) say they reached an agreement last night and are confident they have the votes.
At press time, Waxman and Peterson emerged from a meeting with the Blue Dog Coalition and announced that they reached an agreement.

“We have something that I think works for agriculture,” Peterson said.

The crux of the deal is a concession from Waxman to allow the Department of Agriculture — not the Environmental Protection Agency — to develop and monitor offset and land use provisions the legislation creates.

Waxman said he would not only retain the votes of the environmentalists, but also gain votes from those who represent the agriculture community.

“I think we will have the majority necessary to pass the bill,” Waxman said.
Hopefully those votes don’t include Petri’s. David Anderson, the boss of Petri’s field staff here in Wisconsin, told me yesterday “It’s safe to say [Rep. Petri] is very skeptical.” As a matter of policy, Anderson said Petri doesn’t like to commit on how he will vote before the final bill emerges. But “it’s clear the bill would have dramatic impact in his district.”

So, if you live in the 6th Congressional District (Adams County, east to Manitowoc and Sheboygan counties, including Winnebago, Calumet, Waupaca and Fond du Lac counties), call Rep. Petri’s office today. Or tomorrow at the latest. Tell him Cap and Trade hurts manufacturing and agriculture in the Midwest and is way too costly for any questionable results it may achieve. 202-225-2476 or 800-242-4883, TomPetri@mail.house.gov.
