Burri: In politics, nothing happens by accident

Okay, that’s not exactly true. Some things happen by accident. Somebody falls down the airplane steps, or gets sick on the Japanese prime minister. The teleprompter goes down. Joe Biden speaks out loud in public, instead of just smiling and waving.

But, especially on the highest political stages, very few details of any public appearance are left to chance. Backdrops; clothing; props; the people standing around/near/behind the speaker; even things going on out in the audience. Every event is groomed incessantly – every detail hashed out in advance – to give the desired impression.

Which means: White House handlers wanted President Obama to ask for a Bud Light at his "beer summit" last week.

Bud. Light. In my experience, the second-worst beer in the world. Second only to Michelob Ultra, the only beer I’ve ever refused to finish. Hey, if I open the beer, I’m finishing the beer. If I’m not going to finish the beer, I don’t open the beer. That’s my philosophy. And shortly after opening a Michelob Ultra - after two or three swallows – I headed for the sink. It. Was. That. Bad.

And while the one or two Bud Lights I’ve consumed in my life weren’t quite that bad – I did, after all, finish them – they were bad enough that I’ll never, ever, ask for one. I’ll never drink one on purpose. If all they’re serving at the party is Bud Light, then I’ll just stick to water, thanks.

The Official Beer of the Burri Family might be “whatever’s in your fridge,” but I’m drawing a line. It’s bad beer. I won’t even soak brats in it.

And yet, the White House decided that President Obama should drink it.

Why? I can think of several reasons. For example: Bud Light is one of the most popular beers in America, despite its drop-dead resemblance to stale swamp water. Here’s a chance for the president to reconnect with the common man!

Readers may recall when President Obama had a pizza chef flown – on the taxpayers’ dime – from St. Louis to Washington, D.C. for the sole purpose of making him a pizza. The White House may specifically have been looking for the exact opposite of that little faux pas.

Side coincidence: Anheuser Busch, the company that makes Bud Light, is also from St. Louis.

Or maybe President Obama’s popularity is falling faster in the White House than it is in the population at large. Maybe somebody on his staff is mad at him, and wanted to make him suffer. How better, than to make him drink Bud Light?

I’m leaning more toward the former than the latter, of course: the Harvard educated law professor who grew up in various places around the globe…of course he drinks Bud Light!

Betcha the White House had him drink one before the meeting – the day before, probably. Just for practice. Just so he’d know what to expect. You don’t want him making a face, or reflexively spitting it out at the table.

I wonder: if you’re visiting the White House and ask for a beer, what kinds of beer do they have on hand? Do they always stock Bud Light?

And if so, does anybody ever ask for one? At the White House?

Anyway, give the White House staff some credit for forethought. And hey, kudos for having Vice President Biden drink a non-alcoholic brew, too. Considering what the guy says in public while he’s sober (at least, I assume he’s usually sober), you sure don’t want him within belching distance of a microphone after downing a cold one.
