    Dogs don’t vote

This is too much. Oshkosh City Council members just can’t decide if dogs should be allowed in the Rusch/Sawyer Creek Park. Well, they did decide, apparently voting unanimously to allow leashed dogs on the hallowed ground. However, “During the discussion, Councilor Tony Palmeri suggested the council put an advisory referendum on the April 2010 ballot to find out if there is the same widespread support throughout the city.”

I don’t know about your idea Councilor Palmeri. (Tony is a great guy and a friend – sorry Tony… just one more thing we won’t agree on!) Listening to your constituents and making these tough decisions are why you guys are getting paid the big bucks!

I suppose there are issues that truly would benefit from an advisory referendum. But at the moment, I can’t think of any. Yeah, lots of tough decisions that must be made. I’ve been there – and have had to make them. And I know dog lovers and some park lovers will believe passionately opposite about the issue. So yes, it can be a really tough – and politically dangerous – decision to make. Nevertheless… make the darn decision.

Outagamie County Supervisor Peter Buckley recently raised the advisory referendum issue in a joint meeting of the county’s Legislative, Audit and Human Resources Committee and the Finance Committee. The point of discussion was the potential of a ½% county sales tax, which the counties in and around the Fox Valley have doggedly refused to enact.
[Buckley] I'm categorically opposed to a county sales tax, but if the board took it up I certainly hope it would let the voters decide. This is too big an issue to decide without input from the voters.
Ok Peter (a good fiscal conservative - and... another good friend – eek!). Raising taxes is a pretty darned important issue. Yeah, very, very political. And, in these days of tough municipal budgets, that ½% sales tax looks darned attractive. Yes, it’s going to be a very difficult decision to eventually have to make.

But no. This is not fodder for an advisory referendum. Elected officials, these tough decisions are your job.
