Be afraid. Be very afraid.
And be prepared. Be informed. Be constructive and ready to do battle. According to his “I’m not running again” speech yesterday, Governor Doyle has big plans for the coming year.
Over the next year and a half, I will be the governor, and not a candidate. And I believe that without all the politics we can get a lot done.
This moment in history won’t be wasted. Some might take a skeptical view, and say, well, there’s not enough time between now and the next election to do anything meaningful. Or there will be some phony analysis claiming that without an election ahead of me, there will be no reason to act. He goes on to list those issues.
- Implement the Wisconsin Covenant.
- Fix the school finance formula.
- Reform MPS.
- Finish the Institute for Discover.
- Create a new Wisconsin Energy Institute.
- Continue work on UW-Milwaukee’s schools of engineering, freshwater science and public health.
- Make BadgerCare available to more uninsured citizens.
- Expand Family Care.
- Move toward use of electronic medical records statewide.
- Keep Wisconsin No. 1 in modern manufacturing.
- Continue to build a strong agriculture economy.
- Expand high-tech industries and increase green jobs.
- Implement recommendations of the Global Warming Task Force.
- Expand energy conservation and development of renewable sources of energy.
- Connect Wisconsin with the Midwest with high-speed passenger rail connecting Chicago to Milwaukee, Madison and the Twin Cities.
Wow.
Let’s see. The regular legislative session ends sometime in mid-March next year. Starting now, that’s 7 months, including the upcoming holiday season. We already know that closed door meetings, sham hearings, and passing a budget repair or bill or rule change or whatever in the wee morning hours may well all be part of the modus operandi. Be on guard; the train will be rolling.

What is the "Wisconsin Covenant"

babs (Tue Aug 18 16:57:26 2009)
A commitment by Governor Doyle to all 8th graders with a B average, who take college preparatory classes and who "demonstrate good citizenship and engage in activities that support my community" will be admitted to a University of Wisconsin system, private Wisconsin school or Wisconsin Technical College and will receive "a financial aid package based on [one's] family''s federally-defined financial need.
I don't know that it's worth the paper it's printed on. Nice flowery words. Nothing new. Wonder when Governor Doyle will commit to looking at the falloff rate from Freshman to Sophomore years and to what extent the system is admitting students inappropriately - and to what extent taxpayers pay to build and maintain too many desks and dorms.

I was just commenting to some of my compatriots last night about this very issue. I may have even used the words, "Be very afraid."
Diamond Jim now is the worst of the worst type of lame duck. He's retiring, he's liberal and he's got two houses of the legislature full of Doylebots. Considering his penchant for spending Wisconsin into oblivion with his give-away plans we the faithful taxpayers are about to be financially raped - make that gang-raped.
(I know, billie, we should have recalled him so this wouldn't happen.)
I expect more of his campaign support groups will get their final financial settlements, he'll ignore the State and U.S. Constitutions several more times; Obama, his mentor, will get everything he needs from the Governor's office, and when he's done wreakeing havoc on Wisconsin he'll retire to New York.
I just hope Scott Walker can roll back most of the damage (shameless political ad) following the 2010 bloodbath.

Doyle's slash-and-burn policies so far have guaranteed WI's indebtedness for years to come. I believe he means to do as much harm as possible in the time he has left. So what to do?
Sign up for Google alerts on him, which will bring you in your inbox, any reference to anything mentioning him. (I used "governor Doyle" as my search term. Then go to the blog or whatever, and reply to that article, pointing out his lies (2003: "I will not raise taxes") or what he's done to WI (budget nonfiscal items, highest per capita deficit in USA, etc.). This shouldn't be hard to do, as he's done so much damage.
Another thing to do is to go to his image-polishing tours, where usually only his supporters and media are, and wave a few signs around, or repeat his 2003 promise not to raise taxes, back to him. He, and the media, need to see opposition!
It definitely does work, as the recall team proved. Early in June, we began hearing rumors of his probable decision not to run again, but we kept up momentum, using the tools described, until the announcement was official.
We HAVE to let this monster know, we will not stand for any more of his rubbish.
