    Skateboards and the nanny state

For crying out loud, when do we start talking to our neighbors? And listening to our neighbors?

On tap for discussion at the City of Appleton’s Safety and Licensing Committee (Thursday, Sept. 24, 4:00, 6th Floor, City Hall, 100 N. Appleton Street) is a resolution that would label as a “nuisance” (oh my) any “excessive skateboard noise,” defined as “jumping over ramps, flipping the board, turns, anything that constitutes the board leaving the ground.”

Anything that constitutes the board leaving the ground? Excessive skateboard noise?

A nuisance? Hmmm. Wonder what kind of nuisance. All kinds of them constitute a fineable offense in Appleton. Public nuisances affecting health. Public nuisances offending morals and decency. Maybe that’s it. Or is it Public Nuisances affecting peace and safety? Nuisance animals? Weeds and wild growth? Discharge of hazardous materials? Nope. Here it is. “Loud and unnecessary noise.” $50 first offense, $150 second offense.

How many have called the police or maybe even their alderperson – in lieu of talking to a neighbor? Ok, maybe it’s a last straw kind of thing, being kept awake at 2 in the morning by what could be really inconsiderate neighbors who haven’t responded to polite requests. Neighbor discussions over and over with irresponsible parents and/or uncaring kids. And maybe the police can’t do a thing because skateboarding isn’t illegal. Or something like that. All understandably huge problems (really) to some citizen out there at one time or another

Yes. I understand. But… enough government is enough.

Regulating the exuberance of youthful diversion… When we Americans can’t be civil, can’t accommodate a neighbor’s request, it’s no wonder we continue to ask the government to do every darn thing for us. From skateboards to deciding what your doctor can and can’t do for you. Great. We’ve got it coming.

Jo I am with you on this. We play basketball in our yard with both of our kids. No one that I know of has complained about the basketball hitting the ground or the basket, because as you know that make noise. I can't believe that the city even considers taking this action onto their dockette. Why can't city hall say no we don't deal with that here and refer them back to their neighbor. You are right though a driveway could be set up as a skate park and twenty kids are there banging their skateboards all night long. Keep us posted on the details.
