Local pols to take on Kagen

Well, first I suppose we have to define “politician.” Variations abound, but my handy dandy well-worn Webster’s says: 1: a person experienced in the art or science of government: esp: one actively engaged in conducting the business of a government 2 a: a person engaged in party politics as a profession b: a person primarily interested in political offices from selfish or other narrow usu. short-run interests.

You’d have to say former State Representative Terri McCormick (56th District – Grand Chute to Oshkosh) who ran unsuccessfully against John Gard in the primary for the 8th Congressional District in 2006 was “actively engaged in conducting the business of a government.”

McCormick has a new video up that serves as an advertisement for a new book and also lays down the gauntlet – or at least establishes themes for the upcoming campaign – “ I’d run for public office just to drive [a gang of thugs and bullies] out.” I’m not quite sure if that’s a politician talking about politicians – or if it’s supposed to portray some sort of servant leader theme. What do you think?

Perhaps it’s a theme of humility. Below is from a letter sent this weekend to lists of names collected by the campaign:

Thank you for taking the time to write and call to encourage me to run for U.S. Congress. I appreciate your candor and passion for principled eladership in the Eighth Congressional District.

….I have many ideas on how we can turn our economy, healthcare and job situation around – and I feel an obligation to do something about it! I have been humbled by those of you who have contacted me and those who have written to newspaper opinion pages calling for me to seek higher office. After weighing the reasons to run and the reasons not to run, rest assured that I have considered your opinions.

Hmmm. Maybe all those calls and letters were part of the same political effort that’s been touting the McCormick campaign’s Tuesday announcement (see below) for weeks.

Another politician, Rep. Roger Roth (R-56th) got back into the state Friday – and funny thing – friends and family are orchestrating a welcome home party to take place during the exact same time McCormick is planning her formal announcement. All signs point to Roth announcing his entry into the crowded Eighth Congressional District Republican primary – perhaps even before Thanksgiving. It will be interesting to hear how close Roth’s remarks Tuesday evening come to announcing that candidacy.

Great post this morning, Jo--I think it raises some fair points that need to be considered by GOP primary voters before they decide who's best to take on Steve Kagen and represent the district in Washington.

I've got to respect that Reid Ribble was willing to jump in to the 8th district race long before Kagen appeared to be as vulnerable as he looks now. Additionally, I think 2010 will be the year of the outsider. Nobody is more of an outsider than Ribble.

While McCormick likes to portray herself as the anti-establishment candidate and perhaps she would be if she were running against a candidate like John Gard, this theme cannot hold up against Ribble.

Ribble is a guy who ran a successful business and actually knows what it takes to create jobs on the ground. In my book (especially nowadays), that counts for a lot more than saying one has ideas about the economy, health care, and the jobs situation.

Ribble is also not the one coming out with outlandish, over-produced videos touting his candidacy. That seems like the sort of thing an established politician would do.

I like Teri - I admire her for all the very positive things she has done and agree with many of views.

I'm sort of sad to see this video though. At least personally, I find this kind of 'acting' just as contrived as the false sincerity and posturing from those already inside the beltway. To the point that it's talking down to the viewer.

I'd rather hear a simple, direct statement of what a person stands for - forget about the fake dialogue. If you want to plug a book, tell me what it's about and move on.

Overall the video just seems to be the same manufactured 'campaign speak' (note how many conservative buzz phrases she uses in the video which seem to be inserted because they "resonate with the base") rather than a direct appeal.

I wish her well, I'd certainly rather see her in Washington than the incumbent, but if this video is any indication of the way her campaign and service in office would be run, I'm not sure she's the "different kind of candidate" that independents are searching for.

I watched the video - too high school. People who are not actors shouldn't try to play one on TV.

This congressional race is one that I'll be particularly interested in, as I have no doubt Dr. Millionaire will go back to arbitrarily removing tonsils and cutting off feet after next November.

This will be an exciting race, but overall one thing is most important - KAGEN MUST GO!

People are worried about a video? Dumb. the issues are social security and Medicare bankrupt, overspending, deficits, government control.
People then complain about a video. These things are used to grab attention, which it did.
Does anyone really believe that they can elect a carpet bagging lobbyist?
Go on to issues dummies.

I think what most people are missing and forgetting is that Marc Savard was the one that started this. It is funny to me to see all these politicians stand up and say this is enough. It is now time for change. Marc was the first one to do this. He started the Tea Party movement in this area. All the rest are just talk with no action.

How long will it take the others to do what is right in congress? Will it take them 3 months 6 months or years? We know Marc will do it from the start.

Reid Ribble is indeed a respected roofing contractor. However, before we pronounce him the "outside" we need to reconsile the fact that he was a lobbyist for the last 10 years for the national roofers. In my book that makes him the insider in this race. By the way- what did the roofers get for all the money they paid the likes of Gard and Ryan???

All this criticism of Terri's video reminds me of all the garbage thrown at Sarah Palin when she was announced as the VP candidate. Lets look at her legislative achievements; Disabled Veterans Property Tax Relief, Healthcare Partnership that reduced the cost of prescription drugs, Small Business Reform Act. It was Terri McCormick that laid the foundation for Charter Schools in Wisconsin.

With nothing but respect for his service, I have a huge issue with the Roth party. His office announces a Welcome Home event? When most of us returned from deployments lasting well over a year, not two months....less than 100 days, we did not rent or borrow an Army Reserve Center to have a huge party to launch a political run for office, we quietly returned to our families, brought close friends and families together in our home to celebrate and returned to our jobs proud of our service and accomplishments and went forward with our lives. We did not use our service to our country for political gain. I know and like Roger, but that was wrong. Whoever is advising him is making some big mistakes. More worrisome for me is the fact he did not realize that that was a out of line.
