The perfect time to say Thanks! to our soldiers

Time again to mail Christmas cards to our heroes in the military in this country and abroad. It’s the third year Pitney Bowes has joined forces with the American Red Cross. Last year’s goal of 1,000,000 cards was surpassed by almost 50% - !!. (See last year's message recapping the results - 1,440,000 cards!)

This year’s deadline for cards to be received is Monday December 7. Mail yours now!

(Please do not mail your cards to “A Recovering American Soldier,” Walter Reed Hospital. A well-intentioned, but badly errant email asking for your help is still circulating. Here’s Snopes on the subject.)

The video clips and a slide show on the Holiday Mail for Heroes web site are helpful – and moving. Here are the dos and don’ts, listed on the site:

    Do...
    • Sign all cards
    • Entitle cards “Dear Service Member, Family or Veteran”
    • Limit cards to 15 per person or 50 for school class or business group
    • Bundle groups of cards in single, large envelopes (there is no need to include individual envelopes and postage for cards)
    Don’t...
    • Send letters
    • Include personal information such as home or email addresses
    • Use glitter – excessive amounts can aggravate health issues of wounded recipients
    • Include inserts of any kind as they must be removed in the screening process
Send cards, by December 7, to:
    Holiday Mail for Heroes
    P.O. Box 5456
    Capitol Heights, MD 20791-5456
“Let’s Say Thanks” is another great corporate Christmas Card effort – this time sponsored by Xerox.

The web site gives you an opportunity to send a free printed postcard with a personal message of support and appreciation, to U.S. military personnel stationed overseas. Pretty cool. You send your instructions via the internet and Xerox does the rest. Please, join in the effort. And spread the word.

    COMMENTS

We have an entire Infantry Battalion from East Central Wisconsin, not to mention the remainder of the the WI 32d Infantry Brigade in Iraq today. I will try to get an address to send letters, cards and small gifts directly to our own and post it here.
