Still many seats uncontested
Deadline for candidates for local offices is a week away – your nomination signatures must be turned in no later than 5:00 PM Tuesday, January 5. So far, I’d call the results close to home pretty dismal – a spate of incumbents and nary a challenger.
City of Appleton Even-numbered district alderpersons are up for election. As of close of business December 23 (city offices were closed the 24th), the following candidates have filed (or not) their completed nomination papers.
- District 2: No candidates filed to date. John Robin Hill is the incumbent and hasn’t yet filed either nomination papers or a formal declaration that he will not run.
- District 4: Incumbent Jeff Lutz
- District 6: Incumbent Chad Van Daalwyk has declared he will not run. An Outagamie County Supervisor for a portion of the district, Tanya Rabec, has filed her nomination signatures. So far, like every other district, she is unopposed.
- District 8: Incumbent Joe Martin
- District 10: Incumbent Michael Smith
- District 12: Incumbent Cathy Spears
- District 14: Incumbent Christopher Croatt
- District 16: Incumbent George Holznecht
Appleton School Board Two Board members, Jeff Knezel and Julie Baker, are up for re-election. Both are running again and to date, are unopposed.
How many gasped at the huge AASD property tax increase when you opened your tax bill two weeks ago? It’s a very tough time for schools – perhaps fresh, conservative (?) blood on the Board wouldn’t be the worst. It’s a tough job – not everyone has the time and energy to do it. But pleeeeze, think about it…
Town of Grand Chute Two supervisors are up for re-election and both Dave Schowalter and Jim Pleuss are running again. Pleuss has an opponent – longtime Plan Commission member Bruce Sherman.
Outagamie County Board All 36 seats are up for election for 2-year terms. So far, all 36 incumbents are running for re-election – which means no empty seats at election time. Great. And, 11 seats are contested!
Eeek - correction! I misread Clerk Christensen's helpful graph and her corrections are in the comments below. Three incumbents are indeed not running - Kathy Thunes, Stephen Ware and Cliff Sanderfoot in Districts 5, 14 and 20. NO CANDIDATES have yet filed in Districts 5 and 20.
Some of the contenders are the result of a committed candidate recruitment effort by Town of Grand Chute Chairman Mike Marsden. “No doubt about it,” said Marsden. “We have not had effective representation.” When asked what he was looking for in a candidate and ultimately, a county board member, Marsden responded “Someone has to go there [the County Board] and represent the Town of Grand Chute’s needs and concerns…. Yes, we are working very hard to get people to run for these seats.” Every district containing a portion of Grand Chute (13, 15, 15, 17, 32) is contested except the one currently represented by Alan Schmidt, who is running again in District 32.
The contested seats:
- District 1: Charles Schmidt (I) challenged by Michael Potter and Sue Wollersheim.
- District 2: Helen Nagler (I) challenged by Brian Farmer
- District 8: Peter Beckley (I) challenged by Ernesto Gonzalez, Jr.
- District 11: Kathy Groat, appointed incumbent, challenged by Bill Recker
- District 13: Diana Janssen (I) challenged by FP News reader David Hinds
- District 14: Dan Buechel running unopposed. Incumbent Stephen Ware filed a declaration of noncandidacy.
- District 15: Jim Pleuss (I) challenged by Tony Awofeso
- District 16 Patricia Stevens (I) challenged by Van Callies
- District 17: Jim Duncan (I) challenged by Jim Krueger
- District 33: Dean Culbertson (I) challenged by Dan Garber
- District 34: Andrew Gitter (I) challenged by Shane Griesbach
City of Neenah I don’t have current details here, but do understand that FoxPolitics News reader Bill Pollnow is planning on running for alderperson in District One. Great! Incumbent Mark Lange won’t be running.
It’s not too late. Head to your County, City, Village, Town or School Board Clerk. Pick up the papers you need, get the requisite signatures - and make a difference!

COMMENTS
I decided to run for Outagamie County Board District 13 supervisor because I wanted to give back to our community. There is no doubt in my mind that we live in the greatest country in the world and we are called to return that blessing by giving our service. Running for public office, win or lose, is to show true patriotism and dedication to the founding principles of our nation.
During my career as a state public servant (now retired), my challenge was to help government perform more effectively and efficiently. My daily efforts were spent trying to reduce cost, increase efficiency and improve services to the public through innovation.
If elected as the District 13 Outagamie County Board supervisor, my promise is that I will not support any tax or fee increase during my two-year term. The County needs to live within its means just as much as we citizens are doing during these most difficult economic conditions. This is not the time or place to increase the County spending or fee increases to citizens.
My purpose is to serve as the “citizens’ County Board supervisor” by being a fiscally prudent watchdog of yours and my county tax dollars. I pledge to donate my net pay received from this position during my term to local charitable organizations in order to further assist the charities serving our citizens. Furthermore, I would challenge today other elected public representatives to donate a portion of their salary to charitable organizations.

Hi Jo....
I'd like to make a correction to your article. The County Board has 3 incumbents, (open seats) that are not running for re-election: District 5 - Kathy Thunes; District 14 - Stephen Ware; and District 20 - Cliff Sanderfoot. To date, District 5 and District 20 do not have any candidates that have filed!

Nancy Christensen (Mon Dec 28 08:44:36 2009)
Eeek! Thank you Nancy. I'll make corrections in the story above. I misread your great chart on line.

Jo (mon dec 28 09:26:25 2009)
is there a reason you ignore winnebago county?

tom widener (Mon Dec 28 12:36:45 2009)
I'll get to Winnebago Co. ASAP. Just didn't get to it Tom. Do you have the info? Would like to do Calumet too... Unlimited municipalities...

Jo (Mon Dec 28 15:30:29 2009)
Jo
there is an open seat for district 4 in Menasha which no one has filed nomination papers for as of yet.
I believe that there are two open seats on the Menasha school board
