Talk health reform with Feingold (Th), Petri (today)
Senator Feingold will be in Appleton Thursday morning, January 7 at 10:30 a.m. for a “listening session” - the Appleton Public Library (lower level), 225 N. Oneida Street. (Feingold will be in Oshkosh at 2:15 p.m. Thursday, in the Reeve Union Ballroom, UW-Oshkosh, 748 Algoma Blvd.)
Listen? What are the odds Feingold changes his vote, regardless of what the final health reform bill looks like? Less than 1%?
Regardless, it’s important we share reasoned, informed thoughts about the Reid Bill and its Manager’s Amendment – and the behind-closed-doors negotiating process going on as we speak.
My question will be: How accurate are the latest CBO estimates and how will we, our children and our grandchildren afford the Reid Bill, including subsidizing hefty giveaways in selected states? (How can CBO estimates keep up with all those giveaways?)
Other important questions – can someone out there put one of these on your list and try to get called on?
- Senator Feingold defends the so-called public option as the key to reducing costs. That’s folly, and market forces simply must be allowed to work in health care. The pressure on costs is not coming from greedy insurance companies but from costs that increase because of consumers who don’t give a whit about what they think someone else is paying for their health care. How does the good Senator think the public option will reduce costs? What are the chances secret negotiations will produce a bill that includes a public option? If the bill doesn’t contain a ‘public option,’ how soon does he see separate legislation passing that will create such an animal? [Well, I guess that’s more than one question… Eeek.]
- How much does Senator Feingold believe families in different household income categories should pay for their health care? 8% of gross income? 10%? 25%?
- From what he hears from constituents, how much do those in various household income categories think they should pay for their health care? (Probably not much…)
- How does he see that the government will refrain from ever-increasing subsidies to families who think someone else should pay for their health care?
- Does he defend the continued deductibility of health care premiums by employers?
What other questions will you have for Senator Feingold?
Petri in Kimberly – today Congressman Petri will be at the Kimberly Municipal Complex, 515 W. Kimberly Ave., in the Evergreen Room, at 2:00 this afternoon.
Same questions. Added questions about his take on how out of the ordinary (or not?) were (and are) behind-closed-doors negotiating that went on to put together whatever we finally get as health reform. What are the chances a bill may not pass and that we can start over with more modest, cost-control and access reforms? Has he been able to do anything at all to influence the outcome of the health bill? What are the politics of Republicans trying to defeat the bill (being seen as the “Party of No”) and start over? Will cap-and-trade come to the floor in the Senate this session? What issues is he working on, post-health reform?
Next week
Tuesday, January 12 N.E.W.Patriots will be hosting an informational forum with Republican candidates Marc Savard and Roger Roth, two of six Republicans running in the 8th congressional district primary to oppose Steve Kagen in November.

COMMENTS
I agree, Jo. I've written to Feingold and received a "canned" thank you for letting me know your opinion letter but nothing else. It is the SAME letter I get from him whenever I write to him on any subject, with only the RE: line changed. We desperately need new representation in Washington. At least when I write to Kohl, I get a somewhat more responsive letter. And when I write to or call Kagen's office, I get a person who just seems to tally calls asking, are you in support of whatever I'm calling about but doesn't want to hear my reason. I think we all recall him saying that he hears what his constituents want but votes for what HE thinks is best for us. Thanks Mr. Nanny.
