Basketball fans eyeing extension of Miller Park sales tax

    Why am I not surprised?
The extension of the Miller Park sales tax is likely the best way to help fund a new basketball arena in Milwaukee, according to a number of prominent Milwaukee business executives.

Given the current anti-tax political environment and the reluctance of any elected official to lead a push for a new basketball arena to replace the 21-year-old Bradley Center in downtown Milwaukee, the extension of the existing 0.1 percent sales tax could be the silver bullet that proponents of a new facility are seeking.

.... The tax currently is slated to sunset in 2014, but is likely to be extended because sales tax revenue has lagged in recent years due to the economic downturn.

Any expansion of the sales tax to include a new basketball arena would need to be approved by the state Legislature.

“This is a tough pickle, but it’s going to take some very strong leadership and it’s going to take a combination of private and public sector," Milwaukee real estate attorney Bruce Block said. “The public sector has gotten a free ride for most of this stuff and let other people do the work for them. They are going to have to jump out there and the private sector has to stand up and support it, but it’s going to be a complicated, difficult problem to solve.”
    You're telling me.
