Habitat for Humanity builds dreams – does the government?

I don’t know how well our governments (federal, state, parish, city) are doing in New Orleans and environs. (Well, I surely have my opinions, but can’t claim them to be fully informed….)

What I do know is that countless volunteers continue to build countless homes in hurricane-ravaged Louisiana outposts.

A few weeks ago, ten “senior crew” top-notch building volunteers from the Greater Fox Cities Habitat for Humanity joined college students from Ohio, Toronto and New York to build dreams, just as they do over and over in the Fox Cities. Their extensive experience and patient supervisory skills helped complete four homes in Slidell, Louisiana.

These guys worked and bunked with scads of these generous, giving, college kids – kids that belie those who only see a selfish, spoiled, misbehaving younger generation. The kids hung an envelope on a wall and filled it with comments for these old (and not-so-old) guys to read - only after they began their journey home.

    From the kids
You were the best supervisor this week! Your patience was incredible and I truly learned so much. What a blessing this entire week was and a lot of that was thanks to you! God bless you in all that you do! Sincerely, “dustpan”

Baboo! Jambo Sand! Thank you so much for the amazing week we got to spend together. I had a great time learning Swahili, construction, and a lot of patience. Your wisdom and stories really made my week great. You were such a blessing. Your compassion and love for other people is so apparent. God really blessed me by being on your crew this week and I hope you know how much I appreciate all you did.

It was an honor to work with you, sir. I learned a lot about building codes and random Swahili words. Thank you for your confidence in me. I appreciated your kind words about my creativity. It was a fun week and I’m glad we were able to work together. You’re a good leader. Thank you for your time and effort. God bless.

After these weeks, I am on such a high of faith, confidence and the attitude that I can build anything. I’m very glad I was able to share this experience with you.

I hope you all know how much your presence here really meant to me (and to us all). As much as you had apprehensions about us, we were a little worried too. You might be surprised how many of us kids would love to hear your stories, but feel as ostracized by your generation as you feel by ours. Thanks for breaking all those stereotypes and going far beyond anything we could have hoped for. You are all amazing and your laughter and encouragement really meant a lot to me. Thanks again and may God bless each of you as you share love with the world.

    From me
Thank you Habitat, for all you do. Thank you guys, for melting away the years between generations.

    COMMENTS

Somehow, I have a feeling that this wouldn't have been such a good and uplifting experience for all if it had been done by the government.
Wow. Good point. Surely seems the governments aren't getting done what they need to get done. It's good that helping to give folks hope is left to organizations like Habitat. JE
