So what’s wrong with the UW system, you ask?

Well, there's a lot wrong with the UW System. (FoxPolitics guest “lecturer” Kyle Duerstein addresses his school extending its code of conduct to off-campus activities. A Journal Sentinel article about the issue was featured in FoxPolitics News yesterday. Also, read today’s article in the Badger Herald.)

Its amazing to me how the state university system here in Wisconsin doesn't want to do anything to step on the toes of their borderline psychotic professors, who lecture more about nonsense than about the subject they profess to be teaching, but when it comes to the students, well, it seems that the students, in the eyes of the administration, are the most insignificant aspect of the UW system.

Currently, there is a system committee set up to examine whether or not students should be punished by the University for their conduct off campus. Doesn't the University have enough to do?

Many from both within the system and outside of it, want to see UWS Chapter 17, relating to the non-academic misconduct of students, expanded so that it includes behavior off campus. What does this mean for students? It means that if a student is speeding through South Dakota during a summer road trip, s/he could be kicked out of their state of Wisconsin University. Never mind that if students do something illegal while off-campus, they'll get a citation from the police. That doesn't matter. Apparently, penalties that municipalities and the state implement for breaking laws aren't grave enough. Now, we've got to kick students out of school too.

This is wrong on so many levels.

I pay my university to educate me in my course of study. I don't pay them nearly $7,000 per year to be my big brother.

The only way the University would know if I did something deserving of being expelled or suspended from college would be to examine police records. Currently, the UW System spends $5 Billion. How many more positions are we willing to add just to add a completely unneccesary level of punishment? How much more tax money are we willing to spend so that students can fall victim to double-jeopardy punishments by receiving sanctions from municipalities and from the University for the same act?

How much are the taxpayers of Wisconsin willing to hand over to the UW System so that the System can be Big Brother to its students? They can't even get the education aspect of their mission down. Shouldn't that be the focus?
Kyle Duerstein is a junior at UW-Milwaukee studying Broadcast Journalism; he blogs at http://panthertalklive.blogspot.com/
