Nygren: Bi-partisan Affordable Auto Insurance Act

I am pleased to read that Senator Vinehout (D-Alma) will be introducing a proposal that would scale back some of the onerous automobile insurance changes which were included in the 2009-11 state budget. I would prefer ALL the changes be repealed, however, in an effort to offer a bi-partisan compromise, I will introduce the Assembly version to her proposal titled, the Affordable Auto Insurance Act.

I continue to be extremely disappointed that the Democrat majorities of both houses have repeatedly sided with trial lawyers instead of Wisconsin families. Democrats voted against removing the automobile insurance changes from the budget multiple times. This makes me skeptical that Democrats will actually move to pass the Affordable Auto Insurance Act.

Fueling my skepticism is the fact that Democrats in the Assembly just last week voted 44 - 50 to reject Assembly Bill 525, a bill I am authoring with Senator Mike Ellis (R-Neenah) which would have repealed nearly all of the budget changes. At that time Democrats offered no plan of their own to address rising auto insurance premiums in Wisconsin.

Senator Vinehout’s authorship of this proposal in the Senate highlights how ‘unaffordable’ the budget changes have made automobile insurance in Wisconsin. It is also a tacit admission of the detrimental impact these changes are having on the constituents throughout Wisconsin. I guess in her mind voting to drastically increase insurance premiums during a recession is ‘ok’ if you author a bill to reduce part of the damage late in a legislative session when your party has no perceivable intention of actually passing the bill.

The automobile insurance changes are right now punishing Wisconsin families with inflated insurance premiums. I hope Senator Vinehout and her Democrat colleagues choose Wisconsin families instead of the profits of their special interest supporters and pass the Affordable Auto Insurance Act.

John Nygren (Marinette) is a Republican and represents the residents of the 89th Assembly District.
