Grothman: SB 523 Is Effort to Muzzle UW Employees

Advocates of free speech must rally against Senate Bill 523 introduced by radical leftists, Senator Spencer Coggs (D-Milwaukee) and Representative Mark Pocan (D-Madison). Under the bill, any money received (including presumably that for employee salaries) cannot be used to discourage people from joining a union.

It appears on its face that not only chancellors and deans but department heads, members of committees that determine tenure or other employees would be barred from being critical of a union. Proponents of this bill would not deny this at the public hearing.

This bill would go far beyond the National Labor Relations Act by using the word ‘discourage’ instead of ‘coerce’ or ‘intimidate.’ It may also apply to any employee. It sounds as though economists or business people would be muzzled if they wanted to question the wisdom of joining a union.

Hatred for the free exchange of ideas has always been a priority of the hard Left. Be it the McCain-Feingold prohibitions against political free speech, Tammy Baldwin and Gwen Moore’s vote for the “Fairness Doctrine” to shut down talk radio, or the “hate speech” codes which proliferated at American universities in the 1980s and 1990s, the Left is always afraid of people hearing both sides of the story.

I’m really appalled that the alumni associations and the professors themselves have not been more active. As long as they have a nice house in Maple Bluff or tickets at Camp Randall, I guess they wouldn’t mind it if the freedom to speak conservatively on our campus would be akin to that in Venezuela or Iran. I personally hold the alumni associations responsible for the possibility of unions in the universities in the first place. A one-size-fits-all mentality of a union is inconsistent with the free thought and respect for minorities that is supposed to go on at universities.

It is especially disappointing to see university professors like Bryan Kennedy of UW-Milwaukee and Sociology Professor Chad Goldberg of UW-Madison coming out against free speech. University professors are supposed to be educating our young people on the importance of the free exchange of ideas. It is not surprising such a low percentage of our college graduates are not familiar with the principles on which our country was founded.

Come on Alumni, Faculty, and Students. Get off your butts and fight for free speech. There are more important things going on at the UW-System than the size of professors’ salaries and the record of the UW football team.

Glenn Grothman is a Republican and represents the residents of the 20th Senate District.
