Parins: Legislature fiddles and nothing to show for it
Well gentlemen, the legislative session has ended, thank God significantly higher taxation and regulations did not prevail, but no matter your vote, the Wisconsin economy continues to sink.
Governor "Nero" played his fiddle in Spain, buying trains for an unwarranted, non-financeable train set, Thomas Industries left for Louisiana, Offices for the International Bowling Congress left Milwaukee, Harley Davidson's plans are not for the State of WI, and we almost lost Mercury Marine to Oklahoma, only salvaging the deal with taxpayer funds.
Employers in Wisconsin face, at a minimum, Combined Reporting, increased capital gains taxes, a punishing prevailing wage structure and new health insurance mandates, pushing our once powerful manufacturing center toward the top of the list of the most costly places in which to do business, not only in the USA, but also in the world.
What is going on here? Our citizens need jobs not platitudes and unfulfilled promises. What good are all these intentions (suspect and questionable) if people cannot afford to house and feed themselves?
Our beautiful state is one serious financial downturn from utter economic disaster while a string quartet continues to play away in the marble halls of Madison. So legislators, collect your full year’s salary for four months of work, then go home and allow us taxpayers to pay you whilst you campaign. Something is wrong with this picture….
Richard Parins is the President of the Brown County Taxpayers Association.
COMMENTS
"So legislators, collect your full year’s salary for four months of work, then go home and allow us taxpayers to pay you whilst you campaign."
Personally, I'd much rather pay them a full year's salary for one or two WEEKS of work. The LESS they do - the better!
Maybe they could just spend a week or two each year undoing the mess they've made in the last couple of decades ... then go home and read through all their nonsensical legislation & regulation to figure out what should be removed next.
Less is more.

Jeff Riedl (Wed May 05 07:46:47 2010)
To extend Jeff's remarks a bit, I've often said that I'd donate until I couldn't anymore to any candidate for U.S. President who ran for office on the platform of taking apart our federal bureaucracy: EPA - gone; Dept. of Education - gone; Dept. of Labor - gone; IRS - gone; Dept. of Vets Affairs - gone. I could go on, but you get the picture. Whatever is a duplication of a state funtion should not be done by the feds. And we could still pay our state legislators full-time pay for part-time work!

So Duke, did you support Ron Paul? If not, you should have...

emily matthews (Wed May 05 08:52:48 2010)
I know Richard Parins and he has always been an advocate for conservative government and watching out for the taxpayers dollars. I agree that it was fortunate that many of the bills did not pass or the business climate would be even worse.
However, just complaining about what happened and not working to change Madison will not help. People need to change anger into action and really get involved with the elections this fall.
There are several things you can do:
1.) Attend the information sessions that candidates schedule and ask them tough questions.
2.) Educate yourself on how your representative voted and voice your opinion to your representative. Most people don't bother but believe me the representatives do pay attention to what is called in.
3.) Require you representative to commit to core values and principles that you believe in in order to get your vote.
4.) Participate in a campaign for the candidate of your choice even if it is only a small amount of time that you can give.
5.) Write in to your local newspaper about specific things that your representative has done(good and bad) to help shed light on their record.
If we all just do a little of this, we will have a better legislature and state government in the future. If we take the complacent attitude and don't turn anger into action, we deserve what we get. You know the old saying of doing the same thing over and over again and expecting a different result. Insanity. In our case it could be bankruptcy.

Mike Thomas (Wed May 05 09:10:15 2010)
Let me add to Mike's comments. It's not just YOUR representative(s) you should be helping. So far this year I've contributed to Sean Duffy, in order to get rid of Obey and to Bill Russell to replace Murtha. I'm thinking about helping to fix the City of Sheboygan by finding a conservative winner among the GOP herd attempting to replace the liberal loser, Van Akkeren. When I find which one it is I'll help with fund raising, even though I'm not in his district. We have to find legislative districts that need help in those situations where we live in districts with good representation.
And watch out for what appears to be the latest liberal attempt to keep their people in office - the vote split. They run a lib or two in the primary against the conservative and crossover vote where they have no primary.
And no, Emily, I didn't vote for Ron Paul. If I recall correctly he didn't get even one electoral vote, and isn't he the guy that had the encounter with the UFO? I was forced to vote for the lesser of two evils, who would have been better than what we got only due to the fact that his few-and-far-between vetoes couldn't be overridden by the whacko congresscritters.

IT WORKS!! From the Politico:
In a major blow to Democrats, House Appropriations Committee Chairman David Obey has told close associates that he will not seek re-election and an announcement of his plans is expected as early as Wednesday. Read more here.
