On the surface this appears to be yet another financial burden imposed on Wisconsin citizens by the Democrat controlled legislature. However, this new auto insurance mandate is more far reaching than you may think. I just recently discovered that if you own or operate a moped or scooter you are now required to carry the same minimum liability limits as full-sized automobile drivers.

Imagine you are a parent sending your son or daughter off to college with a moped or scooter as there sole means of transportation around campus. You are a responsible parent and carry liability coverage on that moped. Now, students, such as in this example, are now required to carry liability coverage limits of $100,000 per person and $300,000 per accident and $25,000 property damage.

The over inflated, minimum liability coverage limits are a perfect example why law changes need to be properly vetted thru the legislative process and not snuck into the state budget. We need greater transparency in government and this latest consequence could come at a steep cost for the average student or senior citizen on a fixed income. It’s laughable to say that a 200 pound scooter needs to be insured at the same coverage level as a 2,000 pound automobile.

This begs the question, who else is adversely impacted by the Democrats unnecessary changes in Wisconsin law and at what cost?
