McCormick Nevada connection
Some readers excoriated me yesterday, accusing me of launching an undeserved attack on Terri McCormick’s Q2 campaign finance report (‘Vegas’ McCormick pulls in $53,000 from Nevada). I also had a few say “yeah, so… what’s your point?”
Well, it’s just that the whole thing raises questions. Stuff that just doesn’t seem quite right.
As I mentioned yesterday, the Vegas connection is People V. US, a Nevada nonprofit that endorsed McCormick in June. From their minimalist web site:
We have seen from the inside the destructive goals of those who lead this country. We are ready to put our jobs on the line, to defend our Country through court proceedings. The Constitution of the United States is our authority,
Though I didn’t see the name anywhere on the web site, the incorporation filing for People V. US lists Tony Dane as its President. Note the filing date - April 7, 2010, about 70 days before it endorsed McCormick. (Jerry Bader mentioned this connection in his show yesterday when he read from, then expanded on my FP piece; Jerry had the incorporation tip before I did.)
Tony Dane is the principle of Dane & Associates, and was paid $3,549 by the McCormick campaign in January and February of this year for “fundraising.” In December, 2009, Dane was paid $436 by the campaign for web design. Dane & Associates also did “internal polling” which the McCormick camp took public.
The media in Nevada have lots to say about Dane.
Gay state senator faces many hurdles in Nevada 1/26/10
Shortly into the campaign, Parks' opponent Tony Dane sent out a mailer attacking Parks: an article about a 10-year-old boy who raped two other boys, wrapped around an endorsement of Parks by a local gay newsmagazine. Dane lost to Parks, but in subsequent elections, Dane campaigned against Parks even though he wasn't running against him — including one year when Dane found a traveling salesman named David Parks and added him to the ballot to try to confuse voters, unsuccessfully.
Candidate in campaign managed by Tony Dane indicted for campaign finance fraud 8/18/04
State prosecutors say Moncrief paid almost $8,800 to California based JC Evans Communications to print up misleading fliers on McDonald's campaign letterhead. Moncrief's campaign manager Tony Dane says it was done to fool voters.
Controversial robocall prompts objection in DA race 5/15/10
The call begins with the voice of a woman, crying and hysterical, saying, "I'm sorry to call you this way. I just really have to say something."
The woman says she had her skull fractured and arm broken in a "domestic dispute that turned violent." Then she references a domestic violence charge leveled at Kent by his former wife more than 20 years ago.
Pahrump resident Tom Lovette said when he answered the call about 9 p.m. on a Saturday, he thought it was his daughter calling from San Diego after being attacked.
…. Those searching for the culprit need look no further than conservative political activist Tony Dane, who manages a Las Vegas company called AutomatedCalling .
Ok. Dane was hired as a fundraiser and was just doing his job, bringing in folks from Las Vegas and all over the country, with a strong belief in a candidate, to contribute to the McCormick campaign. What do you think? Is this just normal stuff for American campaigns these days? Should we be asking questions?
Jo Egelhoff, FoxPolitics.net
COMMENTS
Yea, Jo, we should be asking questions. But about the payola we call campaign contributions, and you refuse to discuss the corruption that results. I take that to mean you are again going to run for office and don't want to be hampered in fund raising. So be it. Hide it as best you can.

Jack Lohman (Wed Jul 21 07:50:14 2010)
I don't know Ms. McCormack or what it's like to run for office. I give those who do credit for making the effort in a shark tank like politics. However, if I did run I would go the utmost effort to make sure the pillars of my campaign would be self-investigated to their fullest extent. Fund-raising, consultants, and staff would count as pillars. If people can do a little bit of linear thinking accompanied by a few mouse-clicks and find such disingenuous characters like this Mr. Dane, I seriously question the candidate's readiness for prime time. Again, I do not know the candidate personally, but if Bader & Egelhoff (no disrespect at all) find this out, what will Steve Kagan's oppo researchers find? They probably found this one already and had it in their McCormack file. I trust the rest of 8th Dist. GOP field will certainly use this tidbit to ensure their own operations are in order.

Brady Kiel (Wed Jul 21 07:56:42 2010)
So we can learn something from this - certainly those who run for office are influenced by those who that surround themselves with (we continue to see THAT play out time and time again).
None of the Tony Dane stuff looks particularly tasteful, or the kind of stuff I'd like to see attached to a candidate I would vote for.
So now I'm interested in why Terri McCormick decided to work with this particular "fund raiser"? Did she not check in to the background, or does she not care? Sure would be good to hear from the candidate.

Jeff R. (Wed Jul 21 08:03:02 2010)
Jeff: FP will post, at any time, an unedited response/explanation/information piece from the McCormick campaign.
Jack: Time for you once again to consider running for something. Put your time and commitment where your mouth and pen are.

Jo (Wed Jul 21 09:18:54 2010)
Jo, I'm pushing 73 years old. We don't need more old politicians, we need honest ones. I spend my time trying to open the eyes of those who don't like where we are and also don't understand how we got here. I don't succeed on your blog, but otherwise I do.

Jack Lohman (Wed Jul 21 09:23:02 2010)
"Excoriated?" Relax Jo, I didn't think yesterday's responses amounted to much more than typical bickering and disagreement. Heck, it's gonna be Ribble or Roth that replaces Kagen anyway, so this whole deal with Terri is just sideshow. And a special message for Jack Lohman: when the government, under threat of incarceration, starts seizing a citizen's property (money) to give it to candidates with whom the citizen is in total disagreement, we've lost any claim to being the land of the free.

(Wed Jul 21 09:31:43 2010)
And Jo, all of that begs the issue. Why don't you, as either a potential candidate or blog operator, educate the people about the high costs of a corrupt political system? I've not heard you once say that our political system is corrupt and must be fixed. All of your railing about the "other side" gets us nowhere. We need pragmatic leaders to make the public aware of corruption of both the D's and R's.

Jack Lohman (Wed Jul 21 09:59:13 2010)
I know Terry and respect her. She has done a lot for this community in her career. I believe she was frozen out of the Republican system back in 2006. Her writing about what happened back then is instructive. The fact that Dick Cheney et al strangled her campaign in the cradle certainly doesn't bode well for the openness of our political system. Maybe that is why (if true) her fundraising has strayed. You can bet that there were plenty of favors given and expected between Gard and the nationals when he was funded in 2006. McCormick's does smell bad but, how many favors do her fundraisers expect if any? Jack is right, the money corrupts, especially the bundled money. I'm not sure that someone who looks sleazy is any more corrupting than a nice pleasant looking member of the establishment who is simply more sophisticated at masking their corruption. Harry Truman was accused of being a pawn of the Pendergast machine who helped him get elected. But he wasn't corrupt. The character of the person speaks loudly about how they will handle themselves and I respect Terry's character. I hope she responds to these questions.

dave allen (Wed Jul 21 12:50:37 2010)
So- All of this fuss by Jo is that Terri was endorsed by a freedom organization in Nevada who endorsed and raised money for her is bad.
I seem to remember that Jo while running for office was a carpetbagger in Appleton ( much the same as Ribble who she has endorsed naturally), who tried to fool the public about where she lived and took 100K or more from the US Chamber of compromise. Oh but thats all OK !

Jack (Wed Jul 21 14:43:01 2010)
The US Chamber of compromise? Oh brother. You have your facts wrong Jack. I'm out there on FP every day, working to alert folks to the news of the day. I'm proud of my beliefs, proud of my service to my community and pleased as punch to live in this land of the free.

Jo (Wed Jul 21 16:01:31 2010)
Jo, I think you provide a good service to the community and certainly have the right to push your choice of candidate. But you skip over my question... do you condone our pay-to-play system?

Jack Lohman (Wed Jul 21 16:46:00 2010)
“These numbers clearly indicate that Steve Kagen is headed for retirement in this conservative district,” says polster Tony Dane. “From the Cap and Tax bill to a new economic stimulus bill, more bailouts for banks or businesses, and comprehensive immigration reform, Kagen is going to have a tough time,” says Dane.
GOP Primary, Republicans
McCormick …. 13.99%
Ribble ……….. 4.53%
Roth …………. 11.11%
Trager ………… 10.29%
Other ………… 9.88%
Undecided …… 50.21%
Gen. Election Ballot Test
Kagen …………. 37.94%
McCormick …… 44.58%
Undecided ……. 17.48%
Kagen Vitals
Favorable ……… 35.77%
Unfavorable …… 47.56%
Undecided ……. 16.67%
The sample size of 500 yields a sampling error of less than /- 4.5%.
Terri McCormick supporters say she is well positioned to become the outsider with the name ID and experience to oust “Obama’s Doctor.” She tops a large primary field primarily because she has a base and a strong conservative constituency.
“Although the primary is still months away, the smart money should be on McCormick,” concludes Dane.

"Creditability Can't be Bought....But You Can Try"

DJ (Wed Jul 21 17:34:54 2010)
Someone really should file an FEC complaint against McCormick and Dane for this little scheme they have going.

(Wed Jul 21 17:41:00 2010)
Dale, when this supposed internal polling came out, it seems to me information about the universe and cross tabs were requested but not provided. Do you recall that the credibility of the survey was questioned?

Jo (Wed Jul 21 18:17:54 2010)
>>> "Creditability Can't be Bought....But You Can Try"
You would sure hope that that applies to politicians, DJ, but under the pay-to-play system of campaign bribes (that Jo apparently supports),credibility is almost always for sale to the highest bidder. Even the cleanest politician that enters congress gets immediately hit with their first reality... getting re-elected. And then their principles go out the door.
Jo has elected to not address this corruption, which affects every political issue we discus here.

Jack Lohman (Thu Jul 22 08:37:12 2010)
First off, here is the scoop on the Nevada Liberty connection
http://www.politico.com/news/stories/0810/40839.html
Secondly, lets have a real debate about Mr Ribble, his association as President of The National Roofing Contractors Association and his support for the Kennedy McCain Amnesty plan
http://partyofknow.org/will-the-real-ribble-please-stand-up
I have the evidence Ribble is a Liar and it will be hitting the press next week. I will not tolerate any more Traitors tearing my country apart.

Scott Hamilton (Sun Aug 15 22:24:42 2010)
Thanks for the link, Scott. Gotta love how the media can twist things. Terri has my vote!
