Truth – or not – in the 1st Senate District

Is shaving the truth just your typical campaign strategy – or is it lousy and deceitful? Heaven knows deceit is part of campaigns – so do we just kind of put up with some of it as par for the course?

I’m in the First State Senate District where a primary election is ongoing to replace retiring Senator Alan Lasee. Former State Representatives Frank Lasee (1994 to 2008) and Dave Hutchison (1994 – 2000) are the most active candidates; Jon Soyring is running as well. (Frank Lasee and Alan Lasee are related as distant cousins.)

This all started with a robo call I received Wednesday. My antenna went up not only because I'm always interested in that stuff (!), but also because I'm an active supporter and endorser of candidate Lasee.

A Dave Hutchison supporter waxed admiringly about an early August Door County radio program in which the retiring incumbent, Senator Alan Lasee, praised Dave Hutchison in the same sentence as Reid Ribble, Scott Walker and “good friend” Gary Bies. (Bies succeeded Hutchison in the Assembly in 2000, both representing the District that includes Door County.) The supporter then claimed an endorsement by Senator [Alan] Lasee.

I wasn’t the only one who ran into this little deception. Hutchison proudly crowed this week in the Green Bay Press Gazette (Kewaunee Edition) that Senator Alan Lasee was urging people to vote for him.

For Dave DeRosier from Two Rivers, something just didn’t seem right. He had heard from several people that Hutchison was talking up this coveted endorsement so he decided to do some fact checking of his own.

DeRosier called Senator Lasee and learned the real story – and it made him furious. Senator Lasee told DeRosier flat out he wasn’t endorsing ANYONE in the Republican Primary between Hutchison and Frank Lasee.

Senator Lasee has rightly maintained his neutrality, smiling throughout, offering support and advice to both men. The campaign materials of both candidates include photos with the affable [Alan] Lasee.

Lynette LeFevre from Sturgeon Bay had an experience similar to DeRosier’s. LeFevre shares that Hutchison told her he’d been endorsed by Senator Alan Lasee, unlike his opponent Frank Lasee, who had allegedly not received the prized public support. LeFevre spoke to (Frank) Lasee’s wife, Amy and ended up taking down the Hutchinson signs in her yard and writing a letter to the editor expressing her displeasure.
….Today Dave Hutchison stopped by my house and told me he was endorsed by Alan Lasee. Alan Lasee has not endorsed anyone to replace him. He has said he will wait until after the primary, because he wanted to let the candidates earn it and let the people decide who would succeed him. Why would Dave make this up? He must be desperate to be a State Senator.
Father of 6, the 73 year-old Senator known for the cowboy hat and boots he wears everywhere, served in the legislature for 36 years. Much of that time Lasee also served as a town supervisor or the town chairman. Alan Lasee has a reputation for candor and straight talk; I love it. No matter who you are, you know Alan’s word is good.

Alan Lasee knows – and preaches – that in politics, the only thing you have is your word and your reputation. Is the false claim of endorsement such a big deal?

    COMMENTS

Hey, there are Ribble calls and staff knocking on doors saying his opponents don't support the troops in Afghanistan.

Ribble says that those types of campaign tactics are used by career politicians. Must have got a crash course from John Gard.

    **Can't wait to hear Katelynn's response :)
