Geez - take one for the Gipper and do the right thing

Isn’t democracy great? Seems to allow stupidity to rise to the top once in a while. Yup, we can all have input, bring all the experts in, make all the logical, rational arguments you want.

But if there’s one thing you learn in politics (heck, in life), no matter what you do, somebody’s going to complain.

Here’s a great example. Little, hometown issue. But something like it goes on everyday in every big and little berg around the country.

Appleton is resurfacing one of its older, wider streets - State Street – which these days is 49 feet wide. Wow. A side street (only 1,300 vehicles per day!) that’s a four-lane roadway. Should be a pretty straightforward proposition. Narrow the street. Use less concrete. Less impervious surface, less to plow, less road salt, have lots more room for trees, wider terraces, more grass. More room for water to drain back into its earthen home. This is that rare slam-dunk policy decision.

The city is recommending the street be narrowed to 37 feet – still wide – as wide as several other streets that carry as many as 7,200 vehicles per day!

But no, some of the residents want to keep the 49 foot behemoth. Some are actually complaining there won’t be enough room for cars to pass and some are complaining that they don’t want six more feet to their terrace. And (catch this one), they’re “used to living on a wide street.” What?

Of course, the first thing is it’s not their money the protesters are playing fast and loose with. Building the 37-footer would save enough to pay for a whole ‘nother street.

Well, here’s the point. The best decision for the city is clearly a narrower street – could even be as narrow as 33 feet. Ok, it’s one little issue – but somebody’s got to do the right thing. Yeah, a few households will be miffed. But dang it. Do the smart thing. Do the obvious thing.

Yup, one little issue. Magnify this to those really big issues that need courageous leadership – like health care access and affordability, Medicare and social security. This is when compromising will really get to you. Somebody’s got to step up to the plate, take the heat and get the job done.

    COMMENTS

As Chairman of the Municipal Services Committee, I often find it difficult to make some of the decisions that this committee has before them. That is not the case on this matter. To me, it is a no-brainer that this street should be built only to the 37' that is being recommended. As already pointed out, traffic volumes and construction standards suggest that this could be a 33' wide road. We are compromising just a bit on that by going to 37' to accommodate the large special uses and events that take place on that street several times during the year. It is not often that we, the City, give people back roadway area and make the green space larger, rather we usually take it to widen the roads and thus the houses get closer & closer to roadway. One only needs to look at the City Budget Book (Public Works section) to see that projects scheduled for 2007 have been delayed until 2008 because we do not have enough money available under the tight budget and levy restraints we must operate under.

In all good consciousness, I can not and will not vote at committee tonight to support spending one dollar more than the 37'.
