Marsden running for Outagamie County Exec

Town of Grand Chute Chairman Mike Marsden will be taking out papers tomorrow morning to take a run at the Outagamie County Executive's chair. Marsden is seeking the County’s top job, and won’t be seeking re-election in Grand Chute, because he believes the problems with county government – and county spending – are too critical to ignore.

“The relationship between the county and local units of government must be improved,” says Marsden, who served as an Appleton Alderperson before his long stint as the top guy in Grand Chute.

Marsden, 71, was the Outagamie County Highway Commissioner and Director of Public Works from 1975 to 1998 and prior to that was employed as the Assistant Highway Commissioner in Rock County from 1961 to 1975.

As a start, Marsden believes his 40-year background in transportation will benefit the county to the tune of millions of dollars when more careful analysis of upcoming capitol projects is done. “We need to get a handle on spending in this county.”

Four additional candidates have filed papers declaring their intent to run: County Supervisors Charles Kramer and Ann Strauch, former county supervisor Mike Thomas and former Wisconsin state Treasurer Jack Voight.

At least three have declared their intent to succeed Marsden as Grand Chute Chairman: Former Town Supervisor and current County Supervisor Jim Duncan, current Town and County Supervisor Jim Pleuss and current Town Supervisor Dave Schowalter.

    Jo (or anyone else),
Do you think that 71 is too old to serve?

Now how many of the candidates are well over 60 and will most likely only serve one term? I'm a bit baffled by some of the participants in this race as well as others who are still deciding if they should run. When people take this position so lightly as to announce at the last hour, I do not consider them viable candidates. There is too much preparation that needs to be done to be qualified to serve. Being a candidate early on gives the community time to extend invitations to the candidates for educational experiences. The candidates presently in the race have been given that opportunity. There is much to learn. Those serving or having served in county government especially, should realize the importance of this. If they do not, I have to question their motive behind their candidacy. Serving as County Executive should not be a power trip or something to cross off one's bucket list. There is too much at stake. The commitment has to be to the people of Outagamie County.

Age 71 is not too old in my opinion and I'm thrilled that Mike is running. It should be a fine race! Also hope that more candidates will emerge for Grand Chute leadership.

Age 71 is not too old to serve - absolutely not. A good leader by age 71 just may have the wisdom he or she needs to competently manage Outagamie County. Also, any candidate who gets in this race before January 3 has earned the right to share his/her background/experience/qualifications/preparedness (whatever all that might be) with the voters.

Having known & worked with Marsden in the past I can say that regardless of his age he has always suffered from the under 5'8" syndrome. The real winners if he wins are the people of Grand Chute.
