What does the New York Times know about the gray wolf in Idaho? Or Wisconsin?
What does the New York Times know about wolf populations in Montana and Idaho? And, for that matter, in Wisconsin?
It’s nuts - city slickers in New York City, just like ivory tower denizens in Washington DC, whining about gray wolves – in Idaho for gosh sakes.
These days, the gray wolf is in trouble in the Rocky Mountain West and in Washington, D.C. Several members of the House have introduced a bill that would permanently remove wolves from the protection of the Endangered Species Act. [Oh horrors!]
…. Meanwhile, Gov. C. L. Otter of Idaho — furious at a court decision canceling his state’s wolf hunt — has said he won’t allow a dime of state money to be spent safeguarding Idaho’s wolves. He announced that Idaho won’t do biological surveys, won’t investigate illegal kills and won’t go after poachers.
….What’s needed is a stronger, long-term federal management plan that provides for a sustainable number of wolves across their entire range. If the states can guarantee that number, then let them manage their wolves. If they can’t, then federal protections must remain.
Like Montana and Idaho, we in the Midwest are challenging the drivel from the feds.
Senator Klobuchar (D-MN) wants Minnesota wolves off the endangered list.
The increased number of wolves in the state could threaten residents, livestock and Minnesota's hunting industry, Klobuchar said. She sent a letter Tuesday to Interior Secretary Ken Salazar, urging him to expedite the removal of western Great Lakes gray wolves from the endangered list.
Wisconsin’s DNR submitted their petition for removal in late April.
As if on cue, Paul Socha this week pointed out the continuing wolf problem in northern Wisconsin and linked readers to the DNR’s updated list of wolf attacks on dogs. (I had to look up the definition of “depradation.” Interesting.) Pretty eye-opening info. Payments for damage to livestock in Wisconsin so far in 2010 total $1.1 million.
And the New York Times wants to tell us we’re supposed to continue to protect the gray wolf?
Geeeesh.

Let's just get Sarah her with her rifle. She can murder the wolf and then say some stupid thing like "Oh great and glorious canine I appreciate your sacrifice for my political gain". Take care Native Americans the next thing she is coming after is your gaming activities. From game to gaming. This is all like Alice Through the Looking Glass.

This is why we got rid of Finegold, now we need to remove his judges.

Almost certainly more than you do.

I recently had a conversation with a man who has first hand knowledge of the impact with exploding wolf population is having in the U.P. A neighbor of his whose family has farmed the same acreage since 1908, told him they lost 23 cows in the last 2 years to wolves.
He also told me that another neighbor had an encounter in the woods with several wolves. It is no longer safe to be hiking or hunting those woods.
A recent article by the Wisconsin DNR also noted that their efforts to reestablish elk in the Clam Lake area is not successful due to the increased wolf population.
The New York Times piece is just another example of people who are removed from the land thinking they know best regarding land and wildlife conservation or farm practices. Thanks for putting this issue front and center today.

Real nice cretin comments Billie!

And when was the last time you encountered a gray wolf on an evening stroll around your neighborhood? It makes as much sense for this blog to discuss the issue as the NYT.
(Is the real issue here gray wolves or a chance to slam the elitist East Coast media? Hummm.)
The wolf issue probably isn't even a Wisconsin state issue. The last time I checked the vast majority of Wisconsinites live in or near urban areas where squirrels may be the most menacing species of wildlife.
Let those who must live with the issue: people in rural, upper Wisconsin; Federal Wildlife Management; and the DNR wrestle out a solution (perhaps with consultation from the UW labs).
My preference would be to exclude the Feds and the DNR. But as long as the folks in rural, upper Wisconsin (and similiar places around the U.S.) feed at the governmental trough for special Federal and State aid with land management, forestry, mining, farming, rural assistance, etc., they're stuck with the outside interventions that come with that money.

About a year ago an article on wolves appeared in National Geographic. Accompanying the piece was a map of North America, on which there were numbered locations of EVERY wolf pack on the continent. Each pack has a government-assigned name and is tracked closely.
We have 12 million illegal aliens in the country and no idea who they are or where they are. But the Federal Government can tell you where every wolf is.

How about coyotes? Perhaps Billie wouldn't want anyone to "murder" them, either. However, there was a den right up the road and we live 18 miles due west of Appleton. Some nights you could hear them howl but the clincher was when they "murdered" the neighbor's dog! They aren't howling anymore.
How Sarah Palin entered this conversation I don't know. I have no recollection of seeing her name in the blog, but then, anything goes in the effort to take a potshot at Sarah Palin.

C. R. Stevenson (Fri Dec 10 16:57:42 2010)
C. R. Stevenson, you are right on! Some people posting here don't know how to discuss the issues. Instead, they veer off the subject because they cannot resist an opportunity, no matter how irrelevant, to take a potshot at someone they hate. It was called the "red herring" technique in Speech 101. Grow up, Billie!!!!

Lindy (Fri Dec 10 21:06:20 2010)
I just cannot believe how narrow minded people can be. If you have a problem just get rid of it right? Today ranchers are working with the DNR, and the help of radiocollars, to identify when wolves are near so they can fire off warning shots NOT kill shots. This almost always works. But it's always easier to just shoot the gray wolves so that in a matter of 15 years we can put them back on the endangered species list or worse yet, lead to the eventual extinction of these great keystone predators. Come on people use your God-given brains and think for yourselves for once!

A few years ago I saw a wolf while taking a run near our cottage in Forest County. Absolutely beautiful and majestic animal, however, like everything we need to have balance. Having wolves in Wisconsin is not a problem. Having too many is.
