Outagamie Co Exec forum tomorrow – and on the 19th
Six candidates. Big, important county in Wisconsin. If you’re living in Outagamie County, you’ll be asked to cast a vote February 15 in the primary and again April 5 in the spring election. Tomorrow is a great opportunity for you to get informed about the very different candidates on the ballot for Outagamie County Exec.
County Exec Forum, Friday January 7 Hosted by Heart of the Valley Chamber of Commerce, Advocacy Council 7:30 AM – 9:30 AM Citizens Bank, 205 E. Fourth St., Kaukauna, downstairs
County Exec Forum, Wednesday January 19 Hosted by the Fox Valley Initiative 6:30 PM Fox Banquets, 111 E. Kimball St., Appleton
Brief sketches of the candidates, courtesy of yesterday's Post-Crescent
Outagamie County Supv. Charles Kramer, W2508 Center Valley Road, Kaukauna Kramer is serving his seventh year on the county board. He is the vice chairman of the County Finance Committee and the public works foreman in the Town of Freedom.
Grand Chute Town Chairman Michael Marsden, 130 Edgewood Drive, Appleton Marsden announced he won't seek another term as town chairman to seek the executive post. He was county highway commissioner and later director of public works for a total of 23 years, retiring in 1998. He was first elected town chairman in 1995. He also served on the Appleton Common Council.
Former state Rep. Thomas Nelson, 1510 Orchard Drive, Kaukauna The three-term state lawmaker entered the race on the heels of a losing bid for lieutenant governor in November. Nelson, who chose not to seek another term in the state Assembly, was paired with the Democratic candidate for governor, Milwaukee Mayor Tom Barrett, who lost to Republican Scott Walker.
County Supv. Anne Strauch, 1137 W. Lorain St., Appleton Strauch, currently on the county's Public Safety Committee, is serving in her fourth two-year term on the county board. She formerly served on the Appleton school board for 10 years. She was the community engagement coordinator for the Appleton Police Department until the job was eliminated for financial reasons. She is a licensed real estate broker.
Former Supv. Michael Thomas, 1 Hillock Court, Appleton Thomas was a private sector businessman for more than 35 years with extensive executive experience. He served on the county board from 1992 to 2006 and chaired the Finance Committee during his last two years.
Former state treasurer Jack Voight, 823 E. Sunset Ave., Appleton Voight, owner of an insurance agency since 1974, was treasurer for 12 years, losing to Dawn Marie Sass in his bid for a fourth term in 2006. He was a member of the Appleton Common Council from 1983 to 1993.

COMMENTS
The electin of County Executive is not a full employment program, example, Tom Nelson, looking for work vs. candidates who have demonstrated community involvement, the others in the field. While Mr. Nelson may have some extraneous involvement with Outagamie, what more. The man has yet to work in the private sector, smartly reducing his qualifications as County Executive.

NONE of these candidates enthuse me. Guess we're going to have to do "hold our noses" and vote for the least objectionable one.

(Fri Jan 07 03:11:07 2011)
Here is how I see the candidates.
Tom Nelson is looking for a job that will pay him while he ramps up and campaigns for the 8th Congressional in 2012. He has absolutly no loyalty to the people of Outagamie County, Elect him and you may be having another election in two years.
Anne Strauch claims to be apolitical, but Gail Kagen heads her list of supporters (maybe not since Nelson joined the race). That show me she would be more of a liberal than a fiscal conservative.
Micheal Mardsen - yuck...ethical behavior and his leadership skills are suspect at best. He rules the Town of Grand Chute as a Lord rules his fiefdom. Remember, he was the Town Chair as the pay and benefit packages for Town Board members rose way beyond the state average. It took a Post Crescent investigation to expose this abuse of power for personal gain. Even after other board members voluntarily took pay cuts, he fought to keep his salary.
Thomas and Kramer are both nice guys, but it's a coin toss. I would take Thomas over Kramer based upon Management experience.
This leads us to Jack Voight..who has experience in both the privite and public sector. His experience at the local and state level is a plus. He is a proven fiscal conservative. His integrity and ethical standards are high. As Treasurer he made the drive to Madison nearly everyday and never charged the state a dime. He commuted b Toby Patzer endorses him.
I think Jack is the best of the 3 candidates I would even consider.

Dale McNamee (Fri Jan 07 09:46:08 2011)
I want to thank Dale for his critique of the 6 candidates. I'm a newcomer to the Valley. He brought forth background info on these candidates that helps all of us not familiar with them understand where they are coming from. I know Voight and just met Thomas. I believe the race will come down to these two. Both of which are far superior to all the others.
