    Prep work for tonight’s SOTU

After checking out the SOTU-related links included in today’s FoxPolitics News, start with Dennis Prager – God and Congress
Why do network television cameras never pull back and give a wide-angle view of the president delivering his speech?.... [C]hiseled in the marble wall behind the speaker and vice president, in giant letters, [are] the words, “In God We Trust.”

…. The words “In God We Trust” emblazoned in giant letters behind the president of the United States just don’t sit well with the secular media. So you won’t see them.

…. That is why, I am convinced, no camera tonight will give you a long or wide view of the president. It might change more than Americans’ views of the presidential rostrum. It might change Americans’ views of America.
George Will is tired of the pep rally, stroking “every erogenous zone in the electorate.”
A, they’re overrated — the next morning, the country is still a complex continental country with muscular interests in politics as its own momentum,” Will said. “Between Jefferson and Woodrow Wilson, no one delivered this in person. They sent the report to Congress in writing. But, now we’ve turned this into this panorama. In which an interminable speech, every president, regardless of party — tries to stroke every erogenous zone in the electorate and it becomes a political pep rally, to use the phrase of Chief Justice [John] Roberts last
SOTU prediction from Politico writers: Atmospherics over policy

Roberts, Alito face tough choice on whether to attend SOTU

How will Obama describe, can he describe America’s next phase of greatness? David Brooks says America wants Obama to “define, once and for all, his vision of government’s role” in what a thriving America looks like in the 21st century.

What would Clinton do? Matthew Shaffer at NRO, makes a few observations.

Rich Lowry advises we listen for “investment” in SOTU – the ever-present euphemism for spending.

To my mind, Conn Carroll is often right on the money writing for the Heritage Foundation.
Obama’s rhetoric is a mirror image of President Jimmy Carter’s and his policies are no different either. Tonight’s speech is just old school 1970s tax and spend liberalism in sleek new Obama packaging.
It’s a good piece, calling Obama on the carpet for failed policies and the hypocrisy of further grand economic proposals sure to come tonight.

Senator Inhofe starts the Republican responses early:
Barack Obama is widely expected to call for a consensus approach to governance with the House controlled by Republicans, but Inhofe gently reminds America that Obama hasn’t tried that approach on regulatory adventurism. Inhofe delivers what could be called a State of the Bureaucracy address, and asks Obama to get back to balance by reining in his EPA.
All eyes will be on Paul Ryan
Who will win this tug of war? Paul Ryan has described the war over and over – succinctly and without wavering.
Do we wish to accept a cradle-to-grave welfare state, in which more Americans depend on the government than on themselves, or do we want to promote an opportunity society that promotes human flourishing, connecting effort with reward?
Ryan’s official response to questions about the SOTU: “I am hopeful that the president will work with the new House majority to cut spending, reform government, and restore the foundations for growth and job creation. More than rhetoric, we need results. I look forward to outlining a vision for a future that fulfills the uniquely American legacy of leaving the next generation with a stronger more powerful nation.”

4 things Paul Ryan needs to say – from Bradley Blakeman at Fox News.

The LA Times headline to its Ryan story: “GOP’s responder to Obama favors tax credits for buying health insurance, privatizing Medicaid.” Oh my. Witchcraft.

And then there’s the Washington Post. “Paul Ryan is not what you think” – Ryan’s Roadmap is laden with debt – and is proof higher taxes are inevitable.

Rep. Schakowsky (do you remember her leftist naysaying during the deficit commission meetings?) says America should be prepared to be frightened over Ryan’s SOTU response:
I served with Rep. Ryan on the 18 member Commission on Fiscal Responsibility and Reform, and learned firsthand from the personally congenial Ryan just how dark his vision of America's future is for all but the super-rich.
Shootout tonight in D.C. Or whatever we’re supposed to call it these days. Be there.

Jo I can see that you are going to be vigilant in promoting your ideaology.

Lowry's comment that investing is the same as spending stands out for me.
It is true enough that when one invests that that IS spending...but despite my explainations you miss the point.

Think about your roof leaking, should you invest (spend) in repairs or conserve your money? Most of us can see that spending on the roof saves far more than the cost of repair. This is the same with spending on infrastructure, roads, bridges, rail, power lines and so on. This kind of spending by the government also employs people and heats up the economy, just what we need.

Austerity is just plain stupid right now. All it does is make the problem worse. Why is that so hard to understand?

I would like to see Rep Ryan implore his party and the Dems to support the Obama deficit commission which Ryan was on and the report which Ryan voted to approve. That blueprint for reasonable debt reduction has been ignored by everyone and should not be. He should fight for it.
