Immigration rears an ugly head in Green Bay
It’s a huge problem. And SOMEBODY has to fix it. So Chad Fradette introduced the City of Green Bay Citizen and Legal Immigrant Protection Act. It will be considered at Tuesday’s Green Bay City Council meeting at 7:00 p.m. The act precludes all businesses doing work for the city and/or requiring a license from the city, from employing “unauthorized aliens.”
So, should the “SOMEBODY” be the City of Green Bay? Or Brown County? Or Outagamie County?
The real question is – has the federal government given us, at the local level, the tools we need so our communities can even try to do something about this huge problem?
No.
- It’s been over a decade since immigration laws have been enforced.
- Local police and sheriff’s departments must wait in line for Immigration and Customs Enforcement (ICE) training that is in high demand throughout the country.
- The US border is porous – and will be for at least the foreseeable future.
- The Basic Pilot Program, which is supposed to verify workers as legal for employment, was being used by Swift & Co. when it was raided last year and hundreds of workers were discovered to be illegal. Employers say this huge database screening system is badly inadequate; the Green Bay Act “strongly encourage[s] “licensees and contracted businesses… to enroll”
- Employers using unskilled workers say the number of visas available for guest-workers is woefully inadequate.
- Yes, they’re here illegally. But now, illegal immigrants see a path to citizenship. A pretty tough path, yes. But there’s no way that path will be certain until or if congress finishes its work on the Immigration bill.
And on and on.
So just what is an employer supposed to do? Most especially, what is a small business employer to do, without the resources to adequately check on a worker’s legal status?
Easy to say that everybody involved should have followed the rules. It hasn’t been the answer for more than the last decade, and without the hopefully radical new federal rules and strategies in place, it’s not the answer now.
I would surely appreciate your thoughts – and maybe some brilliant answers!
COMMENTS
First of all, the borders need to be shut. The fence started has to be finished and all the electronic gear has to be put in place.
To use an analogy, I've never heard of building a dam while the river was still pouring through the spot you want to dam. You have to block the water off before you can build. Same thing with people coming into our country illegally.
I see that Irish and Polish illegals have been dragged out as a red herring, but the fact remains that the major part of people illegally in this country come over our southern border from Mexico.
The culture of our country is being changed by the influx of so many people who, seemingly, are not being assimilated into our society through their own volition.
What I don't actually see being dealt with is the fact that a good portion of the illegals don't wish to become citizens. They simply want to come here illegally, work, send money home for some years and then return home to Mexico. There has to be a work permit available so those who wish to work here can do so legally, and immigration laws have to be altered so to become a citizen is not so time-consuming and expensive.
Another thing which must be stopped is the visa lottery. It was a bad idea then and a terrible idea now.
There are also too many felons coming across the border and when they commit crimes in this country, flee back across the border where they will be safe because Mexico will not return those who have committed crimes in this country. Taking care of this would also aid the prevention of drugs and illegal guns coming across the border.
As for the problems with our border patrols, I have to admit I didn't know it was so hard to get into ICE. Obviously that program has to be ramped up and now!
Then, our laws have to be enforced. No more "catch and release." I see Ron Yow is doing a good job at the jail. Now, all jails have to do the same. When we weed out the felons and undesirables we will have a more manageable amount of illegals to deal with.
To try to do everything all at once is asinine. It will end up just like all the immigration laws. Just one more to thumb noses at.
We need this new immigration bill like a drowning man needs a glass of water. We need present laws to be enforced.
There are many more things to put in place before the problem can at least be put on a manageable basis, but this is a start and, I think, the only logical one.

C.R. Stevenson (Mon Jun 04 08:08:13 2007)
Before that despot Sennsennbrenner tried to make a felony out of crossing the border it was a misdemeanor. Misdemeanors and felonies are manipulated by the law.
What if jaywalking were a felony by decree? Would people still do it? And if they did, what would be the punishment?
And it's certainly important to keep the hooligan element out. But it's too bad that we can't deport our own white ones.
I'd like to know how many of the well educated (ne: white class) from the south to whom those few visas are given will want to pick beets or tomatoes or carve up chickens all day.
Maybe volunteer programs from the upper classes can be found to help out during the shortages. And the middle class Stepford Husbands that get such a bang out of mowing grass can commit their time to doing it for others who couldn't be bothered with lawn upkeep.

I am not against Latinos or immigration, but you cannot let your borders fall apart as it has for the past few years and not suffer the consequences. This is really an invasion and not immigration. 12-14 million illegal immigrants from all over the world can causes a real disaster. No country in the world and definitely not Mexico allows people to pour into and sttle in their country. There are other ways to help poor nations.
