    Dress Code for Success

The kids at McKinley Middle School in Racine are “dressing for success” today. No sweat pants or jeans, no hooded sweat shirts. Here’s just a sampling of the uniform-like policy

    • Solid color pants or shorts in black, navy or khaki, twill or corduroy, no outside pockets.
    • Shorts must have a minimum of a 4-inch seam.
    • Girls may also elect to wear skirts, skorts or Capri pants. Skirts and skorts must be below fingertips when arms are extended straight down.

And then there’s Kenosha. The code word for their new policy is “Dress for Learning.” I love it. How about this?
Allowable tops include shirts, blouses, sweaters that:

    • Have rounded, buttoned, collared or higher neckline that must cover chest at all times.
    • Must be long enough to be tucked in, cover the mid-section and past belt line when seated.
    • Must have sleeves
    • Must be neat, clean and in appropriate repair – no holes or tears.
    • Must fit appropriately and not be tight or baggy.

Hallalujah. Wow. I’ve seen (well, admittedly stared at) bosoms hanging out, and if not hanging out, certainly lots of cleavage. And spaghetti straps. Sleeves? What are they?

One mom in Racine complained that her child’s creativity would be threatened when what she can wear is so-o—o-o restricted. Give me a break. Maybe she can get creative with One Flew Over the Cuckoo’s Nest or algebra equations, or maybe even the classic “what I did this summer” first day essay.

Compare Racine and Kenosha with the dress code at my son’s Appleton high school.

    • Students may not wear scanty/revealing clothing. Examples of these items include but not limited to [sic] tube tops, halter tops, backless tops, spaghetti straps, and clothing that expose [sic] the midriff and/or undergarments.

What a difference. What isn’t allowed, instead of what is allowed. So just what is “scanty?” Spend just a moment today at most any high school around the state – the Fox Valley included – I guarantee you’ll see “scanty” clear as day.

It’s time kids learned the discipline, the routine, maybe even some day, the joy, of dressing for success, and lo!!, of dressing for learning. I’m all for it.

Bravo Jo. Yes, dress for success! A dream for teachers, students, parents and administrators.

Imagine the teacher at your sons school having to tell a girl that she is not dressed appropriately. The teacher is then labeled as one who is staring at girls to see if they are dressed right. Not a good position.

Would the cost be high for disadvantaged students to buy the uniforms? Absolutely not! I believe that the good community would donate uniforms as needed.

The requirements noted above say nothing about uniforms, just decent clothes.

The argument about stifling creativity is a bunch of... Truly creative can find ways to be creative and expressive within the rules.
    Hear, hear. Exactly. JE
